On Monday, the Obama administration filed papers formally challenging the constitutionality of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The law gives the states freedom to recognize or not recognize marriages performed in other states – a critical prerogative as the gay marriage push continues across the country. So how can Obama work to overturn a law he’s sworn to uphold? Will this go all the way to the Supreme Court? Will this be a landmark case that eventually determines what a family is in this country?
