Democratic House leaders are allowing a vote to go forward next month that would strip the District of Columbia of the power to make its own handgun laws. Democrats Adjourn; Republicans Keep Pushing for Drilling

Democrats adjourned Congress until after Labor Day on Friday. They turned off the lights, cameras and microphones and left town. But 50-60 Republican members stayed on the House floor to demand Congress return to session and vote to expand offshore oil drilling.

Earlier in the week Barack Obama held a 49-40 percent lead in the Gallup Daily Tracking Poll. Now they are deadlocked at 44 percent each.

Economy Is Growing…But How Strong Is it?

On Thursday, the Commerce Department announced the economy grew by 1.9 percent in the second quarter of 2008. That means we are not in a recession and have not been in one during this entire economic downturn.

Does this suggest the doom and gloom is overblown? Or do other economic indicators such as inflation and the price of gasoline prove that we are in an economic mess, regardless of what the official numbers suggest?
