Stories That Need More Coverage: Unsustainable Debt, China’s Ambitions, Persecution of Christians & More

May 9, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “The Stories That Need More Coverage: Our Debt, China’s Ambitions, Persecution of Christians & More” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for a special edition of the 3 Martini Lunch, as they spotlight some of the most underreported stories of 2025. Which critical issues are the media ignoring entirely? And when the stories are covered, what vital context is missing? Today, Jim and Greg each offer three key examples where the press is failing the public.

First, Jim sounds the alarm on the national debt and the media’s refusal to grapple with the long-term consequences of unsustainable entitlement spending. With Democrats now opposing cuts proposed by DOGE, the press is fixated on the political drama while ignoring the looming fiscal disaster. Meanwhile, Greg blasts the media for siding with illegals in deportation cases while downplaying or completely ignoring the violent crimes committed by individuals living in the U.S. illegally.

Next, Jim flags the lack of serious reporting on China’s growing aggression in the South China Sea, warning that the threat is real but getting very little coverage or condemnation. Greg turns to California, where wildfire victims are still waiting on government permits to rebuild their homes, just as he and Jim predicted would happen months ago.

Finally, Jim asks why more Americans aren’t demanding that U.S. colleges prioritize American students over international applicants. And Greg calls out the media’s near-total silence on the brutal persecution and killings of Christians in Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other parts of the world.

Slaughter in Syria, Mixed U.S. Signals on Hamas, Tucker Questions Iran Threat

March 11, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Slaughter in Syria, Mixed U.S. Signals on Hamas, Tucker Questions Iran Threat” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they break down three major developments in the Middle East, from the slaughter of Christians and other minorities in Syria to the U.S. administration’s mixed messaging on Hamas, and Tucker Carlson trying to convince us that Iran should not be one of America’s major concerns.

First, they react to the horrific sectarian violence erupting in Syria just days after Jim’s departure. Reports confirm that over a thousand Christians, Alawites, and Druze were killed by forces aligned with HTS—the Islamist group that toppled Assad and had pledged not to persecute minorities. Jim rejects the claim that Assad was a better protector for them while Greg stresses that HTS is proving to be just another radical faction wielding power through oppression.

Next, they analyze the Trump administration’s contradictory approach to Hamas. Just last week, Trump warned of death and destruction for the terror group if all hostages were not released. Yet by Sunday, his envoy was meeting directly with Hamas officials and even suggesting they might be “pretty nice guys.”

Finally, they sigh as Tucker Carlson suggests Fox News and others are trying to foment a war with Iran and that if you look at the number of Americans Iran has killed “on American soil,” we have far bigger concerns in our own country. Jim and Greg reject Carlson’s terms for judging Iran and do not want a war with Tehran. But they do stress the importance of keeping Iran in check as it reportedly nears deployable nuclear weapons.

Solar Panel Surprise, The Migrant Emergency, Subway’s Name Change Game

August 9, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “Solar Panel Surprise, The Migrant Emergency, Subway’s Name Change Game” on Spreaker.

Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram is in for Jim today. Join Scot and Greg as they dig into an Italian study showing solar panels generate far more carbon dioxide than natural gas, and that the United Nations never took Chinese statistics into account – even though it produces 80 percent of solar panels. They also sigh as Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey announces a state of emergency due to the number of migrants pouring into her state. But instead of blaming the issue on the Biden administration’s porous border or refusal to deport, she chalks it up to the government being too slow to approve work authorization for the migrants. Finally, they end on a lighter note by discussing the promotion from the Subway sandwich chain that will land the winner $50,000 in Subway gift cards in exchange for changing their name to Subway.

Sudanese Dictator Ousted: What Next for Persecuted Believers?

April 17, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Sudanese Dictator Ousted: What Next for Persecuted Believers?” on Spreaker.

For 30 years, Omar al-Bashir ruled Sudan with a corrupt and vicious iron fist.  During his time in power, Bashir was ruthlessly brutal to the nation’s Christian minority.  His heartlessness attracted worldwide headlines during the humanitarian crisis in Darfur last decade.

Last week, al-Bashir was finally ousted in a military coup.  But what toll did he exact on Christians in his country?  How did he target and persecute them?

In this podcast, Voice of the Martyrs Radio Host Todd Nettleton addressed those questions, examines what sort of government is likely to come next in Sudan, and why life is still very difficult for Christians in the region, even after the creation of the new nation of South Sudan.

World Watch List Reveals Nations Most Hostile to Christians

January 17, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “World Watch List Reveals Nations Most Hostile to Christians” on Spreaker.

Communist North Korea is once against the world’s worst persecutor of Christians, but Islamic oppression is by far the greatest threat to believers around the globe according to the 2019 World Watch List from Open Doors USA.

The list of 50 nations also shows persecution sharply on the rise in prominent places like India, China, and Russia.

While persecution is on the rise in many parts of the world, Open Doors USA President and CEO Dr. David Curry says North Korea is still home of the worst brutality.

“If people know you’re a Christian, you’ll be arrested, taken to a labor camp and (you’ll) probably die there.  You’re not allowed to have a bible.  They’re illegal.  They consider Christians to be the number one enemy of the state,” said Curry.

Eight Islamic nations follow North Korea on the list – Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Pakistan, Sudan, Eritrea, Yemen, and Iran – with Afghanistan just a whisker behind North Korea for the worst nation to live as Christians.  India is now up to the 10th spot.

Curry says the growing strength of the Taliban makes life very difficult for believers in Afghanistan.

“There’s an underground church there but it’s very difficult for them to function,” said Curry.  “They don’t have the prison systems that North Korea does.  It’s more of a vigilante kind of a justice.  If they find out you are a Christian, you’ll be expelled from the family.  You could be beaten, killed, or raped,” said Curry.

Thirty-four of the fifty nations listed due to “Islamic oppression.”  So why do those government feel threatened by their Christian minorities?

“The ideology is what it’s all about for them.  They see Christians as apostates, as infidels.  These are radical Islamic folks who have an agenda to impose their world view on everybody, including the West if they could,” said Curry.

And why is India so high on the list?  Curry says the country has changed drastically in just a few years.

“The government has a radical Hindu agenda.  They’re attacking Christians and there are hundreds of cases against Christians and churches in that country.  They are good citizens, but it runs contrary to the BJP party’s nationalist Hindu agenda where they say you’re not an Indian unless you’re Hindu,” said Curry, noting that the government is even harassing Mother Teresa’s organization helping the poorest of the poor.

He believes a strong stand by American business leaders could make a big difference.

“I would love to see the business community in America – Amazon, Google, all these people that want to get access to that big population – look at their corporate charters.  What does it mean that we’re doing so much business in India when they have such a horrible human rights pattern here over the last six years,” said Curry.

Two other very prominent nations rocketed up the list in 2019.  China surged 16 spots to 27th, while Russia was off the list and is now at 41st.  Curry says Russia is still plagued by Islamic violence in the Caucuses but he is also worried about new religious expression rules being implemented by the government.

He considers China the big story of this year’s list, noting President Xi Jinping’s efforts to  consolidate more and more power in the state.  He says the Communist Party is infiltrating the churches because the regime is fearful of the 100 million Christians there.  Surveillance cameras are everywhere to monitor services and those refusing the cameras are shut down.  So are any pastors refusing to follow the demands for how churches ought to function..

Listen to the full podcast to hear much more about the World Watch List.  Dr. Curry explains why Christian women in these countries are the most vulnerable people in the world, where there is a major bright spot in the middle of the Islamic world, and what he hopes people do with this information.  Dr. Curry also talks about the perseverance of believers in the midst of persecution and how churches in many of these nations continue to grow.

American Pastor Freed from Turkey

October 12, 2018 by GregC

Listen to “American Pastor Freed from Turkey” on Spreaker.

American pastor Andrew Brunson is headed home after two years of detention over what his family and the U.S. government say are trumped up charges of espionage and terrorism.

And a leading organization assisting persecuted Christians is applauding the Trump administration for its handling of the Brunson case while warning that religious freedom is eroding in Turkey.

Brunson was actually convicted in a Turkish court Friday and sentenced to three years and one and a half months of prison. However, the judge released him because the years in detention amounted to “time served.”

A tearful Brunson thanked the court. Earlier he made an emotional plea for release.

“I am an innocent man. I love Jesus. I love Turkey,” said Brunson.

Open Doors USA President and CEO Dr. David Curry says these were bogus charges from the start, trying to tie Brunson to the failed coup against Turkish President Recep Erdogan.

“(Brunson) has been a part of Turkey for over 20 years.  He been a faithful pastor there, great part of the community, good citizen.  This was a political issue.  They tried to use him as a pawn in a larger political game that did not work.  We’re grateful that the administration really held the line on this and was able to get him released,” said Curry.

Curry says the prosecution of Brunson was over politics and the pastor’s Christian faith, and the obvious mistreatment allowed for many different nations and groups to pressure Turkey for Brunson’s release.

He also says the Trump administration’s refusal to hand over another figure allegedly tied to the failed coup attempt is a major win.

“We can’t send a signal that hostage diplomacy is going to work.  It was a very good move not to give into that,” said Curry.

Since the failed coup in 2016, Erdogan has shown far less tolerance for Christianity.

“The increased raids on churches and these kinds of things that are happening in Turkey are sending signals that the environment is changing there,” said Curry.

However, Curry is most gratified that Brunson remains firm in his faith after this difficult ordeal.

“I think we take encouragement in that.  I think it is also a signal to us to really take the lessons of people who go through harder things than we do when we face discouragement or opposition or even  some sort of resistance or persecution.  Stand in Jesus.  It is the solution.  It’s the medicine we need for a broken heart.  I think Pastor Brunson is an example of that quite well.

Listen to the full podcast to hear more of Dr. Curry’s analysis of the Brunson case, the reality for believers in Turkey and more.
