Why the Green New Deal is Really Red

February 21, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Why the Green New Deal is Really Red” on Spreaker.

Socialism is re-entering the national debate and Cold War scholar Dr. Paul Kengor sees the ideas and policies that fueled the spread of communism returning, this time disguised as the green agenda.

Proposals like the Green New Deal call for a significant transformation of American society in order to combat climate change. In his State of the Union address, President Trump criticized such ideas, saying, “America will never be a socialist country.” Since then, he makes ridiculing socialism a major part of his campaign messaging, and many allies echo his words of condemnation.

Dr. Kengor is a professor of political science at Grove City College. He has written a number of books including “Dupes: How America’s Adversaries have Manipulated Progressives for a Century” and “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Communism”.

Dr. Kengor argues that the Democratic green agenda is socialistic, and, whether they admit to it or not, their desire for more big government control is their driving passion.

“That’s where their hearts are. That’s when you really saw their motivations, what drives them, their broader thinking about this.”, said Dr. Kengor

Kengor sees an old ideology at the root of these policies.

“Three of their four planks are about things like the Economic Bill of Rights, abolishing the electoral college; things that are political, economic, ideological much more than they are environmental. This is, sort of, classic leftist, progressive, socialistic, economic socialism more than it is green environmentalism.”

Dr. Kengor believes this is a time tested strategy of the far left.

“Many of those old reds went green”, he explains. After the fall the Soviet Empire, many communist and social politicians in Russia and Eastern Europe joined environmentalist parties. Their attraction to environmentalism, Dr. Kengor says, comes from their desire for power.

“For the old communists and socialists, what the environmental movement allows them to do is control and regulate and limit people and resources.”

Kengor contends the cause of environmentalism is especially attractive to socialists because of nature’s inability to object.

“Among other things, the beauty of it for them is that the trees and frogs and rocks and birds can’t tell them to go take a hike.”, Dr. Kengor says. “So it’s sort of the perfect silent constituency for the far-left.”

Kengor is encouraged by the overwhelming negative response the New Green Deal received, and believes Mitch McConnell’s call for a vote was brilliant. He thinks the legislation is clearly ridiculous, and welcomes the opportunity to see where Democrats stand on the issue.

“All of which makes me wonder, if maybe Elizabeth Warren’s old pal Ed Markey from Massachusetts didn’t pull a sabotage on the young Ocasio-Cortez. This really ought to be a career killer for her”, says Dr. Kengor.

Listen to the full podcast to hear more of Dr. Kengor’s critique of socialism, why he thinks the Left’s environmentalism is simply a vehicle for increasing state authority, and what he thinks the proper response to proposals like the Green New Deal should be.

Chicago Cops Blast Smollett, Coast Guardsman’s Terror Plot, MSNBC Whiffs on Washington

February 21, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Chicago Cops Blast Smollett, Coast Guardsman’s Terror Plot, MSNBC Whiffs on Washington” on Spreaker.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America are grateful to see Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson rebuke Jussie Smollett for perpetrating a hate crime hoax and damaging the reputation of the city. Johnson also blasted the media for ignoring serious issues while providing wall to wall coverage of Smollett. They’re also horrified by reports of a active duty military officer who plotted to kill many people with bombings, shootings, and outbreaks of disease. And they correct MSNBC hosts Katy Tur and Ari Melber for claiming that George Washington was a “native son of New York”.

Trump Wants California Refund, Big Brother in Arizona, American in ISIS Misses Home

February 20, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Trump Wants California Refund, Big Brother in Arizona, American in ISIS Misses Home” on Spreaker.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America applaud President Trump for demanding that California return the $2.5 billion it received from the federal government for its high-speed railway after the project was dramatically scaled back. They also raise their eyebrows at Arizona’s plans to collect the DNA of state residents and charge them a fee to do so. And they explain that while our society is very forgiving, it might be asking a bit much to welcome back an ISIS propagandist with open arms.

Virginia GOP Candidate: Dem Scandals ‘Insult to Dumpster Fires’

February 19, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Virginia GOP Candidate Calls Dem Scandals ‘Insult to Dumpster Fires'” on Spreaker.

Campaign season is revving up in Virginia with all legislative seats on the ballot this year and a prominent Republican challenger is warning Virginia of what Democratic control of the commonwealth would look like while blasting state leaders for their current racism scandals.

Over the past three weeks, all three of Virginia’s statewide elected leaders found themselves mired in scandal.  Gov. Ralph Northam gave a radio interview that seemed to condone infanticide and then was discovered to have a photo on his page of a medical school yearbook that showed one person in blackface and another in KKK dress.

Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax is accused of sexual assault by two women, and Attorney General Mark Herring admitted to wearing blackface in college just days after declaring Northam needed to step down.

D.J. Jordan is a longtime public relations expert on Capitol Hill and beyond.  He is running to unseat first-term Democrat Elizabeth Guzman in Virginia’s 31st district.  He says the Democrats have covered themselves in disgrace.

“I would call our executive branch leadership right now a dumpster fire but I think that would be an insult to dumpster fires,” said Jordan.  “As a black conservative, I’ve been saying for a long time that Democrats don’t hold any moral authority on the issue of race.  I think the nation is now seeing that in Virginia with Gov. Northam and his scandal.”

Jordan is especially galled by the Northam revelations following Northam’s aggressive labeling of Republican rival Ed Gillespie as a racist in the 2017 governor’s race “for things that were definitely not even close to racism.”

“Our country will never move forward on the issue of race unless we stop weaponizing race issues and actually create a different culture where we respect and trust each other,” said Jordan.

But Jordan says he’s mystified at how Northam has not gotten as much grief over his late-term abortion comments.

“I am disappointed that Northam’s blackface controversy has gotten more attention than his support for late-term abortion and infanticide.  Both of these issues in my opinion are connected.  They are both an assault against human dignity – racism and abortion,” said Jordan.

Removing abortion restrictions was just one bill pushed by Democrats earlier this year.  They also called for numerous gun control measures, a $15 minimum wage, and a repeal of right to work laws.  Jordan says the narrow GOP majorities in the legislature stopped all of those measures, but it will be a different story if Democrats control the legislature next year.

“All of the crazy left-leaning bills that you have seen that are introduced that have been stopped would become law next year,” said Jordan.

That’s why Jordan is running to unseat Guzman, who he says is simply too far left to properly represent the district.

“Elizabeth Guzman is very, very liberal.  Her policies are very far to the left.  She takes a lot of cues and direction from the national liberal progressive movement, whether it be introducing a bill to prohibit plastic straws in the state of Virginia or whether it be her belief in Medicare for all,” said Jordan.

Jordan says he’s running to stop the socialist mindset from gaining the upper hand in Virginia.

“I’m running to defend freedom and opportunity in Virginia.  I believe the principles that helped my father escape poverty in the Tidewater area of Virginia – and then he went on to build a small business for himself and provide a life for me.   I feel like those principles are under attack in Virginia,” said Jordan.

Calling himself an “opportunity conservative,” Jordan says he wants to champion education and economic opportunity.  He says his earlier service on Virginia’s State Board of Social Services proved to him that endless government programs do not solve poverty.

“I saw a lot of policies that helped low-income people, but I saw way more policies that actually hurt poor people because it created government dependency,” said Jordan.

Listen to the full podcast to hear more of Jordan’s opportunity agenda, why he thinks Republicans can find a receptive audience among black voters if they make the effort, and why he thinks the 2019 elections in Virginia will not resemble the Democratic waves of 2017 and 2018.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America appreciate the comments former CBS reporter Lara Logan made on media bias turning into media activism. They also discuss Bernie Sanders launching another presidential campaign and wonder if the 77-year-old democratic socialist will be able to make waves in 2020. And they also chuckle as California Sen. Kamala Harris stumbles badly over her response to the Jussie Smollett hoax.

‘Rebels Without A Clause:’ Report Slams Dems for Applying Religious Tests

February 18, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “‘Rebels Without A Clause:’ Report Slams Dems for Applying Religious Tests” on Spreaker.

A new Family Research Council report alleges that nine different Trump administration nominees have been the subject of unconstitutional questioning because Senate Democrats are concerned that the strong faith of the nominees makes them unfit for service as a judge or in some executive branch capacity.

The final paragraph of Article VI in the Constitution reads: “The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

But the report, entitled,”Rebels Without A Clause: When Senators Run Roughshod Over the “No Religious Test” Clause of the U.S. Constitution,” accuses 11 Democrats and Independent Bernie Sanders of using a nominee’s faith to deem them unqualified.

“The idea is that the line of questioning from primarily Democratic senators over the past two years has been a violation of the spirit, if the not the text, of that clause,” said Alexandra McPhee, director of religious freedom advocacy at Family Research Council.

The report highlights moments like Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono and California Sen. Kamala Harris being deeply troubled by nominees to were members of Knights of Columbus, a Catholic organization focused on charity and service.

Trump’s nominee to be deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, was hammered by Sanders and Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen for a private letter in which Vought said salvation is only possible through Jesus Christ.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was repeatedly asked by New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker about his personal opinions on homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

Another nominee was peppered with questions regarding things his pastor had said.

Perhaps the best known example is California Sen. Dianne Feinstein explaining her opposition to the nomination of Notre Dame Prof. Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Court of Appeals.

“When you read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you,” said Feinstein.

McPhee says that sort of statement violates the Constitution.

“She’s basically saying that she distrusts Amy Coney Barrett and her ability to be impartial because Judge Barrett has deeply-held religious convictions,” said McPhee.

Listen to the full podcast to hear McPhee explain what is proper and improper in evaluating a nominee.  She also answers counterarguments like how lawmakers ought to be sure a nominee will be faithful to the Constitution and how she would approach a Muslim nominee who is personally favorable towards Sharia law.

Media Messes: Smollet Hoax, Coverage of Kamala, NY Times vs. the Facts

February 18, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Media Messes: Smollet Hoax, Coverage of Kamala, NY Times vs. the Facts” on Spreaker.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America walk through three major media embarrassments in recent days.  They react as CNN’s Brian Stelter suggests everyone but the mainstream media is responsible for lavish coverage of the alleged assault of actor Jussie Smollett, which now appears to have been fabricated.  They also shake their heads as the reporters covering Kamala Harris ooh and ah over the clothes she tries on at a campaign stop in South Carolina.  And they push back hard as the New York Times suggests Republicans are “painting” Democrats as socialists, baby-killers, and anti-Semitic in advance of the 2020 campaign.

Trump’s Emergency, AOC’s Economics, Weld 2020

February 15, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Trump’s Emergency, AOC’s Economics, Weld 2020” on Spreaker.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America criticize President Trump’s unusual press conference decision to declare a national emergency to work around Congress and free up $8 billion for a border wall – although they appreciate his desire to confront illegal immigration and smuggling. They also react to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez cheering Amazon’s decision to scrap plans for a new headquarters in New York, agreeing that crony capitalism is bad but marveling at how little she seems to understand about basic economics. And they yawn and laugh as former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld launches a GOP primary challenge to President Trump.

Battle Over the Border: What’s in the Bill and the Emergency Declaration?

February 14, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Battle Over the Border: What’s in the Bill and the Emergency Declaration?” on Spreaker.

President Trump says he will sign the bipartisan budget bill providing almost $1.4 billion for border security but he will also declare a national emergency to give himself greater latitude for addressing the issue.

The legislation is expected to pass both chambers of Congress as very few lawmakers have a stomach for another government shutdown, but some of the president’s strongest allies are not happy with the contents of the bill.

“This certainly is not as acceptable as was advertised or previewed as recently as Tuesday. There are a number of concerning provisions,” said Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies.

Vaughan is fine with less money than Trump wanted. She is not OK with local governments having the power to prevent wall construction in their jurisdictions or providing legal protection to many smugglers because of language designed to shield those responsible for unaccompanied alien children at the border.

As for Trump’s emergency declaration, Vaughan expects a limited expansion of executive power.

Listen to the full podcast to hear Vaughan explain why Trump really has no choice but to sign the bill and what this deal means for the next round of the immigration debate.
