‘We Call This Infanticide’

January 24, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “‘We Call This Infanticide'” on Spreaker.

Pro-life activists are aghast at New York’s new abortion law, which allows abortions at anytime in the mother’s pregnancy if the abortion provider deems there is any risk to the patient’s health.

On Tuesday’s anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion at any time during a woman’s pregnancy, the New York State Senate approved the Reproductive Health Act.  Cheered lustily by its allies, the bill paves the way to late-term abortions.

“This act permits abortion at any point during pregnancy if the abortionist deems it necessary for the mother’s life or health,” said Alison Centofante, director of external affairs at the pro-life group Live Action.

She says the law in New York previously allowed late-term abortions to save the life of the mother.  She says adding a health exception provides a green light to abortion providers.

“According to Doe v. Bolton at the U.S. Supreme Court, health includes not just physical health but encompasses emotional, psychological, familial, and the woman’s age consideration.  This effectively allows abortion for any reason,” said Centofante.

Centofante stresses that there’s no need to terminate a late-term pregnancy to preserve the health or life of a woman.

“A late-term abortion like this is not needed.  It’s a viable child.  You can deliver that child and save the life of the mother.  We can deal with the health issues separately while saving the life of this child,” said Centofante.

According to Centofante, 75 percent of Americans believe abortion should be banned after the first trimester, but she says what matters is reaching the woman whose world is turned upside down by an unplanned pregnancy.

“No woman walks into a Planned Parenthood abortion facility feeling empowered.  They walk in feeling alone, like they have no other choice.  Many of them, when polled, say if one person had just said that they would help me through this, I wouldn’t have gone through with my abortion.  We need to be that one person for those around us,” said Centofante.

Listen to the full podcast as Centofante explains the New York abortion law in more detail and why some of those who benefit most from it may be violent criminals.

Trump & Venezuela, Media’s Love of Outrage, Dems Pack 2020 Primary

January 24, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Trump & Venezuela, Media’s Love of Outrage, Dems Pack 2020 Primary” on Spreaker.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America cheer President Trump and other leaders in the western hemisphere for recognizing a new leader in Venezuela as the corrupt, socialist regime crumbles there.  Jim unloads on the media for often being more interested in generating outrage – and more clicks – than getting a story correct.  And they get a kick out of another obscure Democrat running for president and the DNC trying to plan for debates with 20 or more candidates.

The Brexit Stalemate: What’s In it for the U.S.?

January 23, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “The Brexit Stalemate: What’s In it for the U.S.?” on Spreaker.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is assembling a new plan to pursue the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, but this effort is likely doomed as well since no consensus exists to honor the Brexit wishes of the voters.

May’s most recent Brexit plan was crushed in the House of Commons, largely because her own Conservative Party cannot agree on a strategy and opposing parties don’t want to help her either.

“Within the Conservative Party, there’s a huge split between those who see the deal as a repudiation of what the people voted for.  Over 17 million Britons voted to leave the European Union and they don’t see this deal that she put forward to them as actually bringing about a removal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.

“Then you have another element within her party I think that believes that this deal does too much,” said Daniel Kochis, a scholar at the Heritage Foundation’s Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom.

Kochis agrees with the first argument, that May is trying to force through a plan that will still leave the UK beholden to the European Union, specifically the customs union.

“I don’t think that this withdrawal agreement did enough.  It kept the United Kingdom in this sort of de facto limbo or perpetual limbo, where they were going to have to abide by the same sort of regulations and rules emanating from the EU but they would have lost their seat at the table to vote on those to help shape them,” said Kochis.

“Many members of the British public and of Theresa May’s own party saw this for what it was.  It was a soft way to keep the UK within the European Union,  They rejected that as not something the British people voted for,” he added.

But what is the U.S. interest in all of this British drama?  Kochis says a lot could be at stake and the U.S. stands to benefit from a clean Brexit.

“It’s in our interest to have a United Kingdom that is sovereign, that can dictate it’s own trade policy, that can dictate it’s own border policy and not allowing itself to take in hundreds or thousands of people against the will of their own citizens.”

“It would allow them to be a strong defense partner for the United States.  For instance, [Britain is] one of the key intelligence allies the United States has.  There is some concern that were they to stay in the European Union that that could be damaged,” said Kochis, who also thinks a bilateral trade deal with the British could be a very good thing for our relationship and our economy.

Listen to the full podcast as Kochis explains why the UK leaving the European Union without a deal on March 29 might be the best case scenario.  He also explains why Theresa May keeps hanging on to her job despite repeated failures at getting a Brexit deal approved.

Virginia Gun Control Effort Misfires

January 22, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Virginia Gun Control Effort Misfires” on Spreaker.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and his Democratic allies in the legislature are fuming after Republicans killed a gun control bill before it ever reached a final vote, and second amendment advocates say the contents of the bill would have instantly turned many law-abiding gun owners into criminals.

“I wish Ralph Northam had run on the issue of gun control.  I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be the governor now if he had said, ‘Oh, incidentally, I’m going to take away all your guns,'” said Gun Owners of America Legislative Counsel Michael Hammond.

Among the initiatives pursued by Northam and other Democrats are a ban on “assault weapons,” a ban on any firearm that can hold a magazine containing more than ten rounds, and strengthening of so-called “red flag laws,” which allow a court to take away guns from someone deemed to be an imminent threat to themselves or others.

Hammond says Northam essentially wants to ban semi-automatic rifles, like the AR-15.  He says there are roughly 50 million semi-automatic rifles in the U.S. But he says that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“He goes on with universal background checks, which sets the stage for a national gun registry and would outlaw private gun transactions between you and your neighbor.  And he goes on to these insidious gun confiscation orders, which he calls red flag laws,” said Hammond.

Hammond calls them insidious because judges can order gun confiscation based only on a complaint and no due process for the person accused of being a threat.  He says any attempt to take someone’s gun away should be treated like a criminal charge, meaning the accused should have full rights to paid counsel.

According to Hammond, the confiscation orders are carried out in the middle of the night and can often lead to deadly consequences when a groggy gun owner fears what’s on the other side of the door.

Listen to the full podcast to hear Hammond explain why most mass shooters – from Parkland to Newtown and many places – could have been arrested for felonies or had their firearms taken away on clear legal grounds.  He also explains why gun owners in many states need to brace for fierce efforts to limit their second amendment rights in the weeks and months ahead.

‘The Manufacturing Sector Has Really Blossomed’

January 21, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “‘The Manufacturing Sector Has Really Blossomed'” on Spreaker.

December manufacturing growth nearly quadrupled expectations as the sector enjoys a much-need revitalization, but what driving the growth and why might it start shrinking.

Experts predicted manufacturing to grow 0.3 percent in December.  Instead, it rose 1.1 percent.  Manufacturing growth stood at 2.3 percent in the fourth quarter and followed 3.7 percent growth in the third quarter.

“The manufacturing sector has just blossomed over the last year,” said Vance Ginn, chief economist at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.

According to Ginn, the catalyst for the resurgence is the tax reform passed in 2017.

“The cost to these manufacturing companies were often too high.  The Trump tax cuts lowered the corporate income tax rate from 35 percent – the highest in the developed world – down to 21 percent and makes us more competitive, along with immediate expensing of depreciation.

“Those sort of things allow for a lowering of costs for manufacturing companies and what do they do?  They start putting more money back into their business,” said Ginn.

But Ginn notes a couple of important twists.  First, he points out that many these manufacturing jobs are vastly different than the ones in previous generations.  He also says the jobs are not returning to the same parts of the country because businesses want a better tax deal and less regulation.

“The institutional framework you have for your economy – if it has too high of taxes, too many regulations, too many union rules and regulations associated with it – that’s going to force people out.  It’s going to make a slower economy and a slower manufacturing sector.

“If you get rid of those, you see what can happen.  Manufacturing is coming back,” said Ginn, noting that jobs once found in the industrial Midwest are now landing in less regulated places like Texas and Tennessee.

Listen to the full podcast as Ginn explains why the manufacturing sector might weaken in the coming months and what the reason could be.

Stunning Media Failures, Planned Parenthood’s Con Job, Hirono Doubles Down

January 21, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Stunning Media Failures, Planned Parenthood’s Con Job, Hirono Doubles Down” on Spreaker.

Alexandra DeSanctis of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America unload on the media for running with the Buzzfeed story on the Mueller investigation that the Mueller team itself has now debunked, and for piling on a group of high school students over the incident at the Lincoln Memorial before almost any of the facts were in.  Alexandra also explains how Planned Parenthood’s own report for fiscal year 2017-2018 debunks four of it’s most oft-parroted talking points.  And they shake their heads as Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono questions whether a member of the Knights of Columbus can be trusted to hold public office and then suggests a resolution condemning religious tests for nominees addresses a problem that does not exist.

Breaking Down the Buzzfeed Story

January 18, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Breaking Down the Buzzfeed Story” on Spreaker.

Buzzfeed sparked a furor Thursday night with a report alleging Special Counsel Robert Mueller has detailed evidence showing President Trump directed former attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, but Buzzfeed’s own reputation has some experts holding their powder dry before reaching any conclusions.

Cohen has already pleaded guilty to perjury charges related to his congressional testimony, and prosecuting documents claim he did so at the behest of a person most believe to be Trump.

According to the Buzzfeed report, Trump specifically told Cohen to tell lawmakers that the Trump Organization scrapped plans for a Trump Tower in Moscow in January 2016. In reality, the plans were shelved in June or July of that year.

Buzzfeed reporter Anthony Cormier says he has not seen any documentation of Trump suborning perjury but he remains very confident in the accuracy and veracity of his sources.  That revelation raises suspicions for some since Buzzfeed suffered heavy criticism for publishing the Steele dossier in January 2017 without verifying the contents.

How damaging is this to President Trump if it is true?  What sort of corroboration would remove any doubt?  And how important is that corroboration given Cohen’s admission as a serial liar.

Listen to the full podcast as I discuss all these questions and more with former federal prosecutor Andrew C. McCarthy, now a contributing editor at National Review Online.

March for Life: Pro-Life Activists Declare Science on Their Side

January 18, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “March for Life: Pro-Life Activists Declare Science on Their Side” on Spreaker.

The 46th annual March for Life unfolded Friday in Washington, with tens of thousands of pro-life activists demanding an end to legalized abortion in the United States and the pro-life movement examining the political landscape with a Congress that is once again divided.

On Jan. 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled there was a constitutional right to an abortion.  Each year since, pro-life demonstrators have flocked to Washington demand constitutional protections for unborn lives.

This year, the theme of the march is “Pro-Life is Pro-Science: Unique from Day One.”  While liberals like to describe themselves as the party of science, Susan B. Anthony List Vice President of Communications Mallory Quigley says the facts are clear on when life begins and her side is right.

“From the moment of sperm-egg fusion and those cells begin to divide that we have a person there.  It’s a very small one but it’s a person nonetheless and (the) DNA is separate from his or her mom.  The baby can have a separate blood type.  If it’s a little boy, it’s a completely separate gender.

“So the unborn child is completely different from your appendix that’s rupturing that needs to be removed.  It’s a separate person that just needs time, nourishment, and a safe place to grow.  That’s just a scientific reality,” said Quigley.

Pro-choice activists have a different standard for when life begins.  Most will point to the moment of birth, but pro-choice groups have also backed legislation punishing criminals for harming an unborn child when the mother is attacked.

Quigley says that disconnect forces the pro-choice movement into a decidedly unscientific position: that the unborn child is a life only if it is wanted by his or her mother.

“Wantedness is the determining factor for the abortion lobby,” said Quigley.

But sometimes is goes even farther.  Quigley cited a recent New York Times story revealing that Planned Parenthood pressures its own employees to abort their unborn children even if they are wanted and make it very difficult for working mothers to stay on the job.

Listen to the full podcast as Quigley also explains why a Republican Congress failed to stop taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood and what, if anything, can be accomplished with Democrats now running the House of Representatives.
