House GOP Tries to Force Vote on Infanticide Ban

House Republicans are now trying to force a vote on legislation requiring medical care for babies who are born following attempted abortions, after Democrats rejected numerous GOP efforts to get a vote on the infanticide ban.

On Tuesday, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise brought a discharge petition to the House floor so members could sign it.  If a majority of House members sign on, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be required to call for a vote.

“Let the members vote to end, frankly, infanticide in America,” said Americans United for Life Chief Legal Officer Steven Aden, who was in the chamber for the signings and at a press conference later in the day.

So far the discharge petition has 190 signatures, meaning Republicans are at least a couple dozen signatures short of a majority.  But the petition stays open for the remainder of the current Congress, which runs through the end of 2020.  Aden is not giving up and thinks more Democrats will join the effort if they feel the heat from their constituents.

“We’re hopeful, but they need to hear from the American people,” said Aden.

Democrats offer a series of objections to the legislation, the most common being that infanticide is already banned through the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act, which was passed in the early days of the George W. Bush administration.

Aden says that law is good but there’s a major problem with it.

“Unfortunately, that bill was a paper tiger.  It simply states that infants that are born alive after an abortion are persons and ought to receive medical attention but there’s no teeth to it,” said Aden.

Fiscal Conservatives Furious over Farm Bill

This week, the Republican House of Representatives and the Republican Senate easily approved a new, five-year Farm Bill, but conservative critics are enraged at the cost and structure of the legislation.

Club for Growth Vice President of Government Affairs Andy Roth says Republicans in Congress barely made any efforts to rein in spending or beef up work requirements for food assistance programs contained in the bill.

Roth says the original House version made some progress in those areas, but any good parts were stripped out in the final version that he expects President Trump to sign.

He says the spending approach was simply irresponsible.

“This was a bill that really didn’t have a score.  They just learned about how much it would cost right before the Senate voted.  Even then, the scorekeepers at the Congressional Budget Office said they still weren’t done counting.  So Congress rushed this bill through, in a lame duck Congress mind you, without even knowing the full ramifications of the bill,” said Roth.

“Lawmakers in Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, were more beholden to special interests than to taxpayers,” said Roth.

The Closing Argument

Democrats and Republicans have high hopes in Tuesday’s midterm elections, and while Democrats are fired up to throw up political roadblocks to President Trump, Republicans are also energized by lacking consistency in their closing message.

Conservative syndicated columnist Deroy Murdock says Republicans should not be talking about the migrants headed for the southern border when Republicans boast the best economy in the past half century.

“We should be talking about the economy, the economy, the economy, the economy today,” said Murdock.

“I know the caravan, or as I call it the pedestrian invasion force, is obviously a very important issue, but the GOP has a gift that’s wrapped in gold foil.  We ought to be talking about that,” he added.

While President Trump has focused a lot of attention on the migrants in the final days of the campaign, Murdock says his brethren in the media are working overtime to make every bad story a reflection on Trump.

“(They’ve done) terribly, as usual.  no big surprise,” said Murdock.

Murdock singled out media coverage of the horrific synagogue murders in Pittsburgh on Oct. 27, when a self-described neo-Nazi who hates President Trump committed the deadliest crime against Jews in American history.

He says no matter what Trump did, the press was ready to pounce.

“All these people said the president needs to unify us, bring us together, let us all heal.  So he goes to Pittsburgh to meet with the rabbi at the synagogue and heal the survivors of this atrocity.  Then they attack him for going there and say how dare you go there, when they’ve been begging for him to heal the country.

“Had he not gone there, the people in the media would have screamed, ‘How come he hasn’t gone there to heal the victims?’  So, no matter what the president does, these jackals in the old guard media will attack him mercilessly, non-stop, no matter what he does,” said Murdock.

The biggest energizer for Republican voters was the Democrats’ treatment of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.  For Democrats, they’ve been amped up to stick it to Trump at the polls since the day he won the presidency.

“The Democrats have pretty much been energized since election night two years ago.  They expected Hillary Clinton, the dutchess of Chappaqua, to rise to the throne of the throne at the White House, for which I guess she was born to serve.  That didn’t work out and they’ve pretty much been in a foaming at the mouth situation ever since,” said Murdock.

While the fate of the Brett Kavanaugh nomination remains up in the air, Senate Conservatives Fund President Ken Cuccinelli says the fight is uniting Republicans in a way that he thinks will dramatically boost GOP enthusiasm heading into the midterm elections in less than five weeks.

Predictions of a blue wave have dominated political chatter even though the Senate map strongly favors Republicans.  Ten incumbent Democrats are running for re-election in state won by President Trump and pickups in Missouri, North Dakota, Indiana and even Montana and West Virginia are possible.

Democrats are champing at the bit to elect Democratic majorities to challenge President Trump and special elections show Republicans have struggled mightily to match the passion on the left.

Cuccinelli says the Kavanaugh fight seems to be changing that.

“The Democrat base was already fired up, so the enthusiasm gap is closing and that’s a very good thing for Patrick Morrisey (West Virginia) and Matt Rosendale (Montana), really all the conservatives running,” said Cuccinelli, whose group is actively supporting Morrisey, Rosendale and Missouri Senate hopeful Josh Hawley.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says there will be a vote this week on the Kavanaugh nomination, leading some Republicans to fear enthusiasm among the base might ebb before Election Day.  but Cuccinelli says Democrats are doing a good job of making sure that doesn’t happen.

“They’re now saying things like, ‘Even if he gets on the court, this isn’t over.  We’re going to try to impeach him,'” said Cuccinelli.  “It lets the Republican base know, including apathetic voters who may or may not show up, that there’s still more at stake on this subject, even after the guy gets to the Supreme Court,” said Cuccinelli.
