Hunter Biden Pleads Guilty, Charging School Shooters’ Parents, GOP Senate Outlook

September 6, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Hunter Biden Pleads Guilty, Charging School Shooters’ Parents, GOP Senate Outlook” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for three complicated martinis to close out the week. They discuss Hunter Biden deciding to plead guilty to federal tax charges, whether parents of school shooters ought to face criminal charges, and the forecast for this years U.S. Senate elections.
First, they focus on Hunter Biden abandoning his plan to go to trial and a subsequent plan to plead guilty without admitting guilt on federal tax charges. Now that he’s simply pleading guilty, what does that mean for sentencing, the chances his father pardons him and more? Jim says it’s all further proof of one thing – that the critics of Hunter Biden were right and Joe Biden and a lot of other Democrats and media apologists were wrong or flat out lying.
Second, they examine this week’s horrific, deadly school shooting at a Georgia high school and mull over whether officials are right to charge the shooter’s father with two counts of second degree murder and four counts of involuntary manslaughter for failing to keep guns away from his 14-year-old son who had already been evaluated as a possible threat. Are charges like this a good way to keep parents more vigilant and accountable for their kids’ actions and for their own actions or does criminal blame belong solely with the killer?
Finally, they examine the U.S. Senate map this year. And while odds look favorable for Republicans to reclaim a slim majority, there are several other seats held by Democrats which should be vulnerable. But so far the GOP challengers are consistently trailing.

North Carolina Supermajority, Midwest Election Misery, Bragg’s Weak Case

April 5, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “North Carolina Supermajority, Midwest Election Misery, Bragg’s Weak Case” on Spreaker.

Ricochet.com Editor-in-Chief Jon Gabriel is in for Jim today. Join Jon and Greg as they welcome the news that a Democrat in the North Carolina House of Representatives is planning to switch to the GOP. The move would give Republicans a veto-proof majority in both chambers of the legislature and allow them to bypass the Democratic governor’s opposition to school choice and more. They also shudder at two big wins for far left candidates on Tuesday, both in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race and in the Chicago mayor’s contest. Finally, they observe legal analysts across the political spectrum suggesting Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has a very weak case against Donald Trump.

Senate GOP Balks at Tariffs, Parkland Officer Faces Charges, NBA Owners Go PC

June 5, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Senate GOP Balks at Tariffs, Parkland Officer Faces Charges, NBA Owners Go PC” on Spreaker.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America are glad to see Senate Republicans expressing major reservations over the Trump administration’s proposed tariffs against Mexico. They also discuss Parkland Officer Scot Peterson facing criminal charges for his non-response to the Stoneman-Douglas High School shooting and wonder whether the charges are appropriate for his dereliction of duty.  And they have some fun with the news that some NBA owners no longer want to be called “owners” because the term is racially insensitive.

Smollett Charges Dropped: Is Privilege to Blame?

March 26, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Smollett Charges Dropped: Is Privilege to Blame?” on Spreaker.

Prosecutors in Chicago stunned the nation Tuesday by dropping all charges against actor Jussie Smollett while still asserting that Smollett faked a hate crime against himself and cost the Chicago Police Department hundreds of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to investigate the case.

“We did not exonerate Mr. Smollett. The charges were dropped in return for Mr. Smollett’s agreement to do community service and forfeit his $10,000 bond to the City of Chicago. Without the completion of these terms, the charges would not have been dropped. This outcome was met under the same criteria that would occur for and is available to any defendant with similar circumstances,” said Tandra Simonton of the Cook County State’s Attorney Office.

Law professor and attorney Horace Cooper, who is also co-chair of the black conservative Project 21 Advisory Board, is appalled by the decision.

“There is nothing I have witnessed in my time…where a prosecution is completely dropped – not deferred but completely dropped – without an acknowledgement of some sort of act of contrition and without any new information coming in to call into question the substance of the original allegations,” said Cooper.

Cooper further asserts the Smollett case proves there is unfair privilege in the U.S., just not in the way that many activists suggest.

“What’s revealing to some people is that this differential between what happens with main street Americans and those who are penthouse Americans: it isn’t actually a function of race.  It is a function of wealth and status,” said Cooper.

He says news that former Michelle Obama chief of staff Tina Tchen spoke with prosecutors also proves his point.

“If you and I were charged, the former first lady’s lawyer’s friends will not be calling on our behalf.  There is nothing like this for main street America,” added Cooper.

Even Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel blasted the decision to drop the charges, pointing out that a grand jury agreed to charge Smollett on 16 counts after seeing just a fraction of the evidence.  He’s also aghast that Smollett was allowed to go free and once again proclaim his innocence.

Cooper points out that Smollett had the opportunity to plead guilty to one count on the initial indictment and likely walk away with a slap on the wrist.  It was only after the actor doubled down on his story that the grand jury returned 16 counts against him.

Listen to the full podcast to hear Cooper explain what option the Chicago Police Department can still pursue in the courts, and why he believes hate crime laws are a bad idea and actually encourage people to play the victim even when no crime has occurred.

California Persecution, Trump Targets Freedom Caucus, Dem Madness Over Gorsuch

March 30, 2017 by GregC

http://dateline.radioamerica.org/podcast/3-Martini-Lunch-3-30-17.mp3

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America slam California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for filing 15 felony accounts against the pro-life activists who recorded Planned Parenthood officials negotiating the price of aborted baby body parts.  They also shake their heads as Pres. Trump tweets about fighting the House Freedom Caucus in 2018, most likely in response to their opposition to the GOP health care bill last week.  And they get a kick out of Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley suggesting any 5-4 Supreme Court decision with Neil Gorsuch in the majority would be illegitimate if Republicans kill the filibuster on nominees to the high court because he says Gorsuch would be an illegitimate justice.
