Tom Steyer Talks Debates, Climate, National Security & More

January 15, 2020 by GregC

Listen to “Tom Steyer Talks Debates, Climate, National Security & More” on Spreaker.

Businessman and activist Tom Steyer remains in the Democratic presidential race and on the debate stage long after other party hopefuls exited the race. But why is he there?  What does he bring to the campaign that other Democrats do not?

In a conversation with Greg Corombos, Steyer explains what compelled him to run after initially deciding not to be a candidate.  They also dive into Steyer’s signature issue of climate change.  What is his specific plan and is it realistic to think we can phase out fossil fuels entirely?

In Tuesday’s debate, Steyer claimed his international business experience has prepared him to be commander-in-chief.  But how does that kind of experience specifically prepare him for deciding whether to commit U.S. troops to combat?

In recent weeks, Steyer has climbed to double digits in polls of voters in the early primary and caucus states of Nevada and South Carolina.  What’s responsible for the surge?

Dems’ Impeachment Ultimatum, Biden’s Bad Energy Gamble, Wine Caves & Selfies

December 20, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Dems’ Impeachment Ultimatum, Biden’s Bad Energy Gamble, Wine Caves & Selfies” on Spreaker.

It’s finally Friday of a very busy week! Jim and Greg have plenty to say about a member of the House Democratic leadership admitting to CNN that the Democrats may never send the articles of impeachment to the U.S. Senate unless Mitch McConnell agrees to the demands of Democrats for how the trial of President Trump ought to be structured.  They also hammer Joe Biden, who admitted that he’s willing to kill thousands – possibly hundreds of thousands of jobs in the energy sector – because he’s supremely confident the green economy will offer just as many opportunities for great jobs.  And they are the glad the holidays are right around the corner as Thursday’s Democratic presidential debate descends into discussions of wine caves and selfies.

Starting Monday, Jim and Greg will begin their six-episode Three Martini Lunch Awards for 2019.  They each hand out 18 awards in categories ranging from overrated and underrated political figures to rising and fading political figures to the best and worst political ideas of the year, eventually working up to their choices for person of the year.  Enjoy these special episodes and let us know what you think of our choices and share who you would choose!

Why Warren’s Math Won’t Work

November 6, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Why Warren’s Math Won’t Work” on Spreaker.

After taking heat from her Democratic rivals for months, Sen. Elizabeth Warren released her plan for covering the cost of government-sponsored health care for all Americans.

Warren says the price tag is roughly $52 trillion over ten years, yet insists she can pay for it by taxing billionaires, cracking down on tax cheats, and streamlining administrative costs of the program.

Chris Jacobs is CEO of the Juniper Research Group and author of “The Case Against Single Payer.” He tells me why all three of Warren’s ideas fall far short of meeting the expected costs, why two of her three ideas are contradictions of one another, and why the math is laughably wrong on the tax enforcement plan. He will also explain what kind of tax increases will really be needed to pay for Warren’s health plans and why he suspects she won’t admit that she’ll have to tax everyone.

What Medicare for All Will Really Cost You

October 30, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “What Medicare for All Will Really Cost You” on Spreaker.

Presidential candidates like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are vowing to abolish private health insurance if elected president and have all Americans get their coverage through the federal government.

Projections suggest such a plan would cost $32 trillion over the first ten years. Warren plans to pay for that with a two percent wealth tax on the super rich.  Sanders admits he would raise taxes on the upper class and the middle class, but both insist their plans will be a net positive financially for American families.

But is that true?  Would the tax plans raise even close to enough revenue to pay for this new entitlement?  National Taxpayers Union President Pete Sepp says they won’t and so does the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Budget.

The CFRB says to make ends meet, lawmakers would need to enact a 42 value-added tax on consumers, a 32 percent payroll tax split between employers and employees, a 25 percent income tax surcharge on all Americans, or require everyone to pay roughly $7,500 to buy into the federal health care program.

In this podcast, Sepp details the devastating effect such tax increases would have on American families and the U.S. economy.  He also addresses the possibility that the government will just let our debt pile up even higher and faster.

Olson Re-Hired, Pompeo Pans Taliban Deal, NRA Branded Terrorists, Fantasy Draft!

September 5, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Olson Re-Hired, Pompeo Pans Taliban Deal, NRA Branded Terrorists, Fantasy Draft!” on Spreaker.

It’s a big day on the Three Martini Lunch!  Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America start by welcoming the news that Leif Olson has been re-hired at the Labor Department just one day after he was falsely accused of anti-Semitism by Bloomberg Law.  Then they are encouraged that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is also quite leery of any peace deal with the Taliban.  And they unload on politicians in San Francisco for labeling the National Rifle Association.

Then, as the NFL begins it’s 100th season, Jim and Greg put a political twist on the occasion and have a lot of fun by holding a fantasy football draft involving the Democratic presidential candidates!

Sanctions Crippling Kim, Is Trump Abandoning Hong Kong? PolitiFact’s Pants on Fire

August 15, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Sanctions Crippling Kim, Is Trump Abandoning Hong Kong? Politifact’s Pants on Fire” on Spreaker.

David French of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America welcome the news that U.S. sanctions are inflicting a devastating economic toll and putting a lot of political pressure on North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Un.  They also cringe at reports that President Trump promised China two months ago that he would not condemn a Chinese crackdown on protesters in Hong Kong.  And they hammer PolitiFact for refusing to criticize Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris over their characterization of Michael Brown’s death as murder.  PolitiFact says, “Legally, it wasn’t. How much should this word choice matter?”

Beto Mania, Social Media and Depression, Warren Waffles on Capitalism

March 14, 2019 by GregC

Listen to “Beto Mania, Social Media and Depression, Warren Waffles on Capitalism” on Spreaker.

Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America argue that Beto O’Rourke running for president is actually a good thing because it will either show media infatuation can get you elected or burst O’Rourke’s hype bubble. They are also concerned by the alarming rise in mental health disorders in teens that is linked to social media use. And they also give Elizabeth Warren a molecule of credit for defending capitalism, only to watch her then say markets don’t work for health care or education.
