Jimmy Carter’s Political Legacy

January 3, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Jimmy Carter’s Political Legacy” on Spreaker.

On Sunday, former President Jimmy Carter died at age 100. He lived longer than any president and had the longest post-presidential life by far. Carter was a one-term president from 1977-1981. After surprising many by winning the Democratic nomination in 1976, he defeated President Gerald Ford in the general election. However, Carter suffered a resounding defeat in his bid for re-election. In 1980, he lost 44 states to Ronald Reagan, and Reagan won the Electoral College 489-49.

As events soon begin to commemorate Carter’s life and public service, Jim and Greg offer what they see as a fair but honest assessment of Carter, particularly during his time in the Oval Office.

First, they highlight Carter’s military service and his impressive victory as a dark horse candidate in 1976. They also discuss what they see as Carter’s successes in the White House—both foreign and domestic—along with some notable achievements through the Carter Center after leaving office. They also applaud his example as a husband during his 77-year marriage to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

However, the Carter presidency overall was not a success. Jim and Greg walk through Carter’s failure to ward off the rise of a radical Islamist government in Iran, which then took dozens of Americans hostage for the next 14 and a half months and has fomented mayhem in the Middle East and beyond ever since. They also assess his weak approach to the communist threat in Central America and Afghanistan. Domestically, he oversaw a very rough economy, and Americans of a certain age will certainly remember gas lines and the energy crisis among other serious challenges.

Finally, they look at his 44 years after leaving the presidency, from his work building homes for the needy to remaining very active in international affairs. But while he was convinced he was right, Carter’s efforts sometimes created headaches for future administrations.

Kirby Disrespects Veterans, Blaming the GOP for California’s Woes, No Single-Family Homes?

September 12, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Kirby Disrespects Veterans, Blaming the GOP for California’s Woes, No Single-Family Homes?” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for a quick and fun discussion of getting spam emails from the DNC. Then they tackle National Security Council spokesman John Kirby disrespecting veterans critical of Biden, an LA Times columnist blaming Republicans for California’s litany of problems, and politicians in Maryland considering an end to single-family homes.

After some quick jokes about the odd, unsolicited DNC emails that Greg keeps getting, they dig into Admiral Kirby hitting “reply all” on a request for a statement from veterans mad about Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and announcing their concerns weren’t even worth a response. “Obviously no use in responding. A ‘handful’ of vets indeed and all of one stripe,” is what Kirby said. Jim says Kirby needs to remember that he works for the people and not the Democratic Party.

Next, they roll their eyes at an opinion column in the Los Angeles Times that admits California is a mess. And even though no Republican has held statewide office since early 2011, columnist Steve Lopez says it’s still the GOP’s fault because of things Republicans did more than 50 years ago and that the Democrats’ many failures under one-party control in recent years are also the Republicans’ fault. Really! Jim has little patience for this revisionism and says Democrats have been able to do whatever they want in California. And what they want leads to disaster.

Finally, they turn their attention to the DC suburbs in Maryland. For years, people on the right have been branded as conspiracy theorists for saying the left wants to put an end to single-family homes and crowd more people into those spaces in order to collect more in property taxes. In Montgomery County, Maryland, the county council is now…surprise…considering legislation to put an end to single-family homes – under the false pretense of creating more affordable housing.

Dems & Wisconsin, Feds & Facebook, Kamala & the Wall, The Taliban & Your Tax Dollars

August 27, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Dems & Wisconsin, Feds & Facebook, Kamala & the Wall, The Taliban & Your Tax Dollars” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they squeeze four stories into today’s podcast, from the DNC’s absurd efforts to undermine democracy in Wisconsin to Mark Zuckerberg admitting the FBI, the White House and other federal entities pressured him over online speech and from Kamala Harris tacitly backing a border wall to the return of repression and terrorist safe havens in Afghanistan.

Before the official martinis, they highlight how Democrats are trying to limit voters’ options ahead of the presidential election. The Wisconsin Supreme Court has thankfully dismissed a lawsuit trying to kick the Green Party’s Jill Stein off the ballot in the Badger State. And it has to be one of the dumbest arguments for removing a candidate that we’ve ever heard.

Then, they react to Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg admitting to House Republicans that the Biden administration urged him to censor COVID-19 content on Facebook, including humor and satire. And the FBI pre-emptively told him to be on the lookout for “Russian disinformation” about the Biden family and Burisma, so he was predisposed to spike the story of the Hunter Biden laptop when it was reported in the NY Post.

Next, they assess an Axios story that suggests Kamala Harris has flip-flopped again, this time embracing a border wall since she’s on the record backing the Senate immigration bill. This change in policy is not something her staffers have announced, but it’s another sign she is running to the middle despite her long radical record – and its happening while Democrats are planning a very progressive agenda in Congress with her full blessing.

Finally, they wince as the Taliban reimpose some of the most repressive policies against women just as we mark three years since the disastrous Biden withdrawal from Afghanistan. Jim also points out terrorist groups, including Al Qaeda, are thriving there again. And all of it happening with your tax dollars.

Casey’s Curious Family Funding, Obama Double-Crosses Biden, Bill Kristol’s Political Fiction

July 11, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Casey’s Curious Family Funding, Obama Double-Crosses Biden, Bill Kristol’s Political Fiction” on Spreaker.

Today, Jim and Greg discuss an attack ad that exposes Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey using his politics to help his siblings get rich, the news that former President Obama greenlit George Clooney’s New York Times op-ed calling for President Biden to step down from the race, and Bill Kristol’s ridiculous claim that Biden’s old age is the only thing working against Democrats in this election.

First, they applaud the Republican attack ad that takes Sen. Casey to task for using his position to enrich his family. They analyze the effect that this ad may have in the upcoming senate race, especially given that the ad ties Casey’s actions to the Hunter Biden scandal, which is still a recent memory.

Next, they shake their heads at what appears to be Obama’s attempts to publicly support Joe Biden but privately sabotage his campaign, greenlighting George Clooney to call for Bide to step aside from the presidential race. Jim thinks that if Obama believes Biden is not fit to be president, then he should tell Biden himself instead of making underhanded moves to hint that Biden should step down.

Finally, they dissect Bill Kristol’s recent tweet that the Democratic party and its policies are basically sound, and that Biden’s old age is the only thing holding them back. Jim and Greg point to the terrible results on the border, economics, and foreign policy that we have seen from this presidency, and wonder what backwards logic led Kristol to his conclusion.

Sen. Kennedy vs. Gun Grabbing Judge, Afghan Debacle Worse Than Thought, Defending Cannibalism?

March 21, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Sen. Kennedy vs. Gun Grabbing Judge, Afghan Debacle Worse Than Thought, Defending Cannibalism?” on Spreaker.

Undisputed King of Stuff, columnist, and longtime Ricochet Editor-in-Chief Jon Gabriel is in for Jim today. Today, Jon and Greg break down one thoroughly enjoyable congressional hearing, an utterly infuriating one, and perhaps the craziest martini of all time.

But before the martinis, they provide a brief update on Jim’s latest reporting, including the closest he’s been to intense Russian bombings in Ukraine. Thankfully, Jim is fine, but please keep praying for his safety and for the Ukrainian people.

In today’s martinis, Jon and Greg appreciate Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy’s master class in exposing President Biden’s radical judicial nominees. This week he flummoxed Judge Nancy Maldonado by highlighting her call for an assault weapons ban in a previous job and making her prove she has no idea what she means by “assault weapons.”

Next, they head to a House hearing in which former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley admits the Taliban has butchered a good number of our Afghan allies and that he and others in the Biden administration never knew how many Americans were in Afghanistan at the time of the withdrawal debacle so they had no idea how many were still there when the military left.

They also highlight testimony from former CentCom Commander Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, who admitted, “When I received the order to withdraw the US military, I was not ordered to plan to get U.S. citizens out, our allies out, or evacuate our embassy.”

Finally, just one week after “right-wing influencers” were accused of falsely stating some Haitian gangs engaged in cannibalism (even though they were right), the push is now on to defend the hideous practice. NewScientist.com laments that in contrast to zombie movies and characters like Hannibal Lecter, “positive stories of cannibals are few and far between.” They also claim our primitive ancestors ate their dead as a sign of respect.

Youngkin Targets the Car Tax, Colorado Bars Trump from the Ballot, Kirby’s Afghanistan Revisionism

December 20, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “Youngkin Targets the Car Tax, Colorado Bars Trump from Ballot, Kirby’s Afghan Revisionism” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they cheer Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin for making a strong case to permanently kill the horrible car tax that resident have to pay every year simply for owning a car. But will the idea go anywhere with Democrats controlling the legislature?

Then they dig into the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to ban Donald Trump from the 2024 Republican primary ballot because he allegedly led an insurrection, and that disqualifies him under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. But with no criminal charges of insurrection and a political acquittal, does the court have any grounds to do this? The U.S. Supreme Court will decide.

They also blast White House National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby for trying to convince us that we really didn’t leave tens of billions worth of military equipment behind in Afghanistan.

Finally, be sure to catch Jim and Greg handing out their prestigious 3 Martini Lunch Awards starting Thursday and running through the end of the year. They’ll reveal their choices for the most overrated and underrated political figures, rising political stars and figures fading into oblivion, beast and worst political ideas, best and worst political theater, and overreported and underreported stories of the year. At the end of next week, they will announce their choices for Person of the Year, Turncoat of the Year, and make predictions for 2024. Join us tomorrow for all of the fun!

Evil Hamas Terrorism, Biden Administration Weakness, Typical Anti-Israel Responses

October 9, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “Evil Hamas Terrorism, Biden Administration Weakness, Typical Anti-Israel Responses” on Spreaker.

Jim and Greg devote today’s podcast to three critical aspects of the horrific terrorist attacks perpetrated in Israel by Hamas over the weekend the worst mass murder of Jews since World War II. First, they chronicle the unconscionable acts of terrorism, torture, rape, and abduction by Hamas – and how the only proper description of the actions is pure evil.

Then they walk through the Biden’s administration’s refusal to confirm Iran was intimately involved in the planning of the attacks even after Hamas and others admit that’s exactly what happened. They also detail how weakness projected by the Biden administration in Afghanistan and in its constant groveling before Tehran to strike a new nuclear agreement likely emboldened Iran.

But they also note that there will likely be significant political consequences in Israel over the failure to prevent or detect the attacks.

Finally, they fume over the very predictable responses from some politicians, media figures, and activists blaming Israel for the carnage or at least creating a moral equivalence between the terrorism and the Israeli military response.

DeSantis & the Storm, Gold Star Parents & Biden, Dems Dodge Transparency

August 30, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “DeSantis & the Storm, Gold Star Parents & Biden, Dems Dodge Transparency” on Spreaker.

Ricochet.com Editor-in-Chief Jon Gabriel is in for Jim, who will return on Thursday. Today, Jon and Greg applaud the competence and preparedness of Gov. DeSantis in Florida as Hurricane Idalia comes ashore. They also note the anguish of the parents of American service members who were killed two years ago in the terrorist attack at Abbey Gate in Kabul – and their frustration at President Biden’s disastrous policies and his callous treatment of them ever since. Finally, they highlight a lawsuit in Michigan after an email about the 2021 Benton Harbor water crisis was written with Greek letters to avoid showing up in a Freedom of Information request. And it was written that way because it suggested the government was caught flat-footed on the crisis.

Timestamps:

0:39 – Hurricane Idalia hits Florida and the state preparedness seems to be excellent yet again.

6:53 – Parents of service members killed in the Abbey Gate terrorist attack express their anguish and their frustration with Biden and his administration.

14:17 – Energy consultant for Michigan Gov. Whitmer accused of hiding his email from Freedom of Information requests by using Greek letters to share bad news about a water crisis.

China’s Lousy Economy, Reality in Afghanistan, White House Briefing Blunders

August 16, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “China’s Lousy Economy, Reality in Afghanistan, White House Briefing Blunders” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they cautiously welcome news that China’s economy is struggling mightily as a result of the prolonged, Draconian COVID lockdowns. But what might China do to distract its people from those economic problems? They also mark two years since the fall of Kabul to the Taliban during Biden’s humiliating exit from Afghanistan – and point out all of the horrific restrictions reimposed on women and girls. Finally, they roll their eyes at the sheer incompetence of White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who butchered the names of both Hawaii senators and referred to Sen. Mazie Hirono as a “he.”
Timestamps:
0:21 – China’s struggling economy
6:22 – Two years after the fall of Kabul, life for Afghan women is as bad as you would expect.
15:09 – Karine Jean-Pierre’s weak performance as White House Press Secretary

Pushing Back on China, Surprising Arizona Poll, Biden’s Gold Star Lie

August 8, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “Pushing Back on China, Surprising Arizona Poll, Biden’s Gold Star Lie” on Spreaker.

Ricochet Co-Founder Rob Long is in for Jim. Today, Rob and Greg are glad to see Italy on the brink of rescinding its cooperation with China’s aggressive Belt and Road economic agenda. They also react to new polling in Arizona showing the Republicans do worse in the Senate race if Sen. Sinema runs as an independent than in a head-to-head matchup with Democrats. Finally, they react to the heartbreaking testimony of the mother who lost her son in the Kabul airport blast and says all President Biden said to her was that his son “came home in a flag-draped coffin.” It’s a lie that Biden has repeated many times.

Timestamps:

0:46 – Italy pulls out of deal to help China advance it’s aggressive Belt and Road initiative.

6:09 – Arizona Senate poll shows Republicans do worse in a three-person race involving Sen. Sinema than in a head-to-head matchup with Democrats.

12:14 – Gold star mother recounts how Pres. Biden told he knows how she feels because his son came home in a flag-draped coffin. It’s a lie Biden has repeated many times.
