Former Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney and National Review Contributing Editor Andy McCarthy joins Greg on today’s 3 Martini Lunch in place of Jim. They discuss the White House taking control over press pool selections, Trump’s tariffs jeopardizing a major political and economic opportunity with Canada, and CNN’s Jake Tapper writing a book about the cover-up of Joe Biden’s decline—after helping cover it up himself.

First, Andy and Greg analyze the White House’s new policy on press pool access for the Oval Office and Air Force One. While Andy thinks the White House wording on the policy shift is over the top, he says the the Trump press team has largely made a point of adding new voices rather than silencing others.

Next, they critique Trump’s plan to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting in March. Beyond the likelihood of higher prices for Americans, they highlight how these tensions have weakened Canada’s conservative party, which once seemed poised for a massive victory but is now struggling. While Trump shouldn’t prioritize Canadian politics, a conservative government there would align far better with his policies than Justin Trudeau’s far-left successor.

Finally, they call out the stunning hypocrisy of CNN’s Jake Tapper. After downplaying and denying Biden’s cognitive decline for years, Tapper is now co-authoring a book exposing Biden’s decline and the efforts to conceal it. Andy and Greg document how Biden’s decline was blatantly obvious for anyone honestly paying attention.

Could the GOP win a Senate seat in Michigan for the first time in more than 30 years? They also discuss the weak fundraising numbers from New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen and debate whether New Hampshire might present a valuable GOP pickup opportunity in the 2026 elections.

Next, Jim and Greg dive into the Democrats’ exaggerated outrage over “unelected bureaucrats” making decisions within the executive branch, particularly regarding the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Democrats have long used the administrative state to push their policies, yet they now criticize the same system they’ve relied on.. However, they do encourage Elon Musk and his team to be more transparent about what they are finding so the American people can see it all.

Finally, Jim and Greg react to the ongoing spat between the White House and the Associated Press (AP) over press access to the Oval Office. The White House allegedly blocked the AP from a pool of reporters during an Oval Office event because the wire service refuses to use “Gulf of America” instead of the preferred “Gulf of Mexico.”

The law is designed to address national security concerns, but Donald Trump’s recent support for keeping TikTok unchanged adds a layer of complexity to the issue.

Finally, Jim and Greg dissect a revealing New York Times report detailing how Senate Democrats lost confidence in President Biden after his disastrous debate performance. They discuss how Biden’s pollsters gave him a mere five percent chance of defeating Trump but never told that to Biden. They also marvel at the lengths to which Democrats and the media tried to deny Biden’s decline when it was blatantly obvious to everyone.

They begin with those who left us over the past year. Jim chooses a former lawmaker who came within a whisker of holding one of the biggest jobs in the country, and most importantly, was a guest here on 3 Martini Lunch. Meanwhile, Greg highlights a conservative stalwart who served in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades.

Then it’s on to a much happier subject as they consider the rising political stars for 2024. They both choose an incoming Trump administration figure who promises to play a very important role as soon as Trump takes office. Greg also offers up an honorable mention for a cable news figure who has excelled at demolishing left-wing talking points while surrounded by Democrats.

Finally, there are a multitude of figures who they see fading into oblivion after this year. Jim looks at some of the most prominent names in the news while Greg eats crow on one of his picks from last year.

We’ve made it to the first Friday of 2024! And Jim and Greg are ready to serve up three martinis – right after Greg shares a fantastic ‘Die Hard’ story.

They start the martinis on the lighter side by reacting to an Axios story outlining tensions in the White House press office as Karine Jean-Pierre and John Kirby split duties in the press room and neither one is particularly is happy about it.

Then they did into Jim’s reporting on the Houthi militia causing so much havoc in the Red Sea that several major shipping companies are refusing to risk attacks and taking the long way to the west around the southern cape of Africa. This will add to the prices we pay for the goods on board. But Jim also points out that Chinese ships are getting a free pass from the terrorists into the Red Sea.

Finally, they also note this week’s ISIS terrorist attacks against Iran at the memorial service for Gen. Soleimani. The blast killed 80 people and injured more than 280 others. Jim and Greg have similar reactions to the news but offer completing ideas to how the U.S. should approach hostilities between two detestable entities.
