Dem Rep Faces Felony Charge, DOJ Probes Chicago Mayor’s Hires, The College AI Crisis

May 20, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Dem Rep Faces Felony Charge, DOJ Probes Chicago Mayor’s Hires, The College AI Crisis” on Spreaker.

Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour host Scot Bertram fills in for Jim on Tuesday’s 3 Martini Lunch. Join Scot and Greg as they dissect the media’s latest effort to protect President Biden, a New Jersey congresswoman facing a felony charge, a Justice Department probe into the Chicago mayor’s hiring practices, and college students increasingly leaning on artificial intelligence to complete their coursework.

First, after a quick take on the media once again running interference for Biden, Scot and Greg focus on U.S. Attorney Alina Habba charging New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver with assaulting, impeding, and interfering with law enforcement during an incident at a New Jersey ICE facility earlier this month. House Democrats are outraged and are threatening retaliation. Scot notes the partisan double standard when it comes to legal accountability, while Greg dismisses the idea that elected officials are somehow immune from arrest under any circumstances.

Next, they examine the Justice Department’s investigation into whether Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson discriminated in city hiring by prioritizing candidates based on race. The probe follows Johnson’s recent remarks explaining his preference for hiring black employees. Scot says the issue becomes obvious when you read the same statement but refer to a different race.

Finally, they shake their heads as college professors are scrambling to stop students from using artificial intelligence to do their work. They’re also stunned at how helpless many students feel without it. Scot shares how Hillsdale addresses the problem and argues the issue reveals something deeper about why students attend college in the first place.

Trump’s Tariff Decision, Trump Praises Gov. Whitmer, Fake Students Steal Your Tax Dollars

April 10, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Trump’s Tariff Decision, Trump Praises Gov. Whitmer, Fake Students Steal Your Tax Dollars” on Spreaker.

Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram fills in for Jim on 3 Martini Lunch. Join Scot and Greg as they break down President Trump’s latest tariff moves, the surprisingly cordial exchange between Trump and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and the alarming surge of fake college students defrauding taxpayers.

First, they analyze President Trump’s announcement that he will pause most of the tariffs announced last week for the next 90 days, while sharply increasing tariffs on China. Other nations will see a temporary reduction to 10 percent. Greg points to the value of singling out China economically, while Scot highlights how Trump’s approach reflects two consistent patterns in his approach to leadership.

Next, they react to Trump’s unexpected praise for Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, calling her “a very good person” and saying she’s done “an excellent job.” While many conservatives in Michigan strongly disagree, Whitmer echoed support for reshoring manufacturing and expressed understanding of Trump’s tariff policy. Scot and Greg explore what’s behind this odd development and how it could impact Whitmer’s likely 2028 presidential run and more.

Finally, they expose how scammers are siphoning off millions in taxpayer-funded financial aid by enrolling fake students in California’s community college system. Estimates show up to 34 percent of community college applicants in the state may have fraudulent in the most recent statistics. But Scot reveals how the colleges are also bending over backwards trying not to remove these fake students.

Reality Eases EV Mandates, Dems’ Election Hypocrisy, Judge Sides with AP vs. Trump

April 9, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Maryland Ends EV Mandate, Dems’ Election Hypocrisy, Judge Sides with AP vs. Trump” on Spreaker.

Undisputed King of Stuff and Sink the Rising Sun author Jon Gabriel fills in for Jim today. Join Jon and Greg on 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss Maryland reversing its electric vehicle mandate, Democratic attorneys general taking President Trump to court over his executive order on election security, and a federal judge forcing the White House to reopen full access to the Associated Press.

First, they applaud Maryland Gov. Wes Moore for walking back the state’s EV mandate, which would have required 43 percent of new vehicle sales to be electric starting with 2027 models. Moore pointed to the Trump administration suspending funding for EV charging stations—a program that received $7.5 billion under President Biden and produced only eight chargers nationwide. But Jon and Greg also note that just 13 percent of new car sales in Maryland are EVs, highlighting how many Americans simply don’t want them.

Next, they criticize the 19 Democratic state attorneys general suing President Trump over his new executive order to strengthen election security, including a requirement to show proof of citizenship to register to vote. While election rules are primarily left to the states and Congress has some oversight, Jon and Greg are stunned by Democrats’ continued opposition to even the most basic voter integrity measures—opposition that’s likely to flare again soon with the SAVE Act.

Finally, they slam on a federal judge’s ruling requiring the Trump White House to grant Associated Press reporters access to spaces like the Oval Office and Air Force One. Jon and Greg argue this is not a First Amendment issue and question why a court would be involved with this at all. They also express fatigue with the White House press corps constantly acting the victim every time the White House does something reporters don’t like.

Americans Want Smaller Government, How the Tariffs Hurt Russia, Stephen A. Smith for President?

April 8, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Americans Demand Smaller Government, How the Tariffs Hurt Russia, Stephen A. Smith for President?” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss breaking news in the New Hampshire Senate race, a poll showing strong public demand for lower federal spending, how Trump-era tariffs may end up weakening Russia, and the strange presidential buzz surrounding ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith.

First, just two days after President Trump publicly backed former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu for U.S. Senate, Sununu has announced he will not enter the race. Jim and Greg briefly assess how this could impact Republican chances of flipping the seat in 2026.

Next, they dig into a new Wall Street Journal poll showing more than two-thirds of Americans want federal spending cut. While not all support the GOP’s approach, the poll confirms deep frustration with nearly $37 trillion in national debt and massive annual deficits. Jim questions how many Americans would agree on where to cut, while Greg recalls the narrow political window when this debt crisis might have been averted in the 1990s.

Then, they’re pleased to see one way Trump’s tariff strategy is already creating pressure on Russia. One of the side effects of the new policy is that oil prices are down significantly since last week. Jim tells us how sustained lower prices could spell big trouble for Putin economically and militarily.

Finally, they roll their eyes at growing chatter about ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith running for president in 2028. And now Smith himself is saying he’s starting to think about it. Smith gained attention last year for supporting Kamala Harris but frequently calling out Democrats for being out of touch – especially on some key cultural issues. Jim and Greg dismiss the hype and even joke that Smith wouldn’t be the best presidential pick at ESPN.

Trump Backs Sununu for Senate, Conflicting Tariff Talk, Signal Leak Explained

April 7, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Trump Backs Sununu for Senate, Conflicting Tariff Talk, Signal Leak Explained” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for Monday’s 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss President Trump urging former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu to run for U.S. Senate in 2026, confusion among Trump’s own advisers over the purpose and length of the latest tariffs, and new reporting on how The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg ended up in a classified White House Signal chat about Yemen.

First, they break down President Trump’s full support for former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu for U.S. Senate in 2026. Trump also revealed that he and Sununu had spoken about the race in the Oval Office. It’s a notable shift in their relationship, which has previously been tense. They also examine the likely Democratic opponent and key dynamics that could shape the race.

Next, Jim analyzes the weekend talk show appearances by several Trump administration officials attempting to explain the new tariffs. He demonstrates how Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, NEC Director Kevin Hassett, trade adviser Peter Navarro, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick offered conflicting statements about the tariffs’ purpose, duration, and expected economic impact.

Finally, they react to the apparent explanation for how Jeffrey Goldberg gained access to a White House Signal chat about military strikes in Yemen. They dig into the details and why this explanation makes more sense, but Jim still warns that private messaging apps like Signal are not secure enough for these discussions.

Another Senate Dem Retiring, Hamas Rejects Trump Ultimatum, Manufactured Grievances

February 13, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Another Senate Dem Retiring, Hamas Rejects Trump Ultimatum, Manufactured Grievances” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss another Senate Democrat retiring in 2026, Hamas planning to release more hostages but not meeting Trump’s demands, and Rep. Schakowsky speculating whether the term “manufacturing” discourages women from pursuing those jobs.

First, they react to the surprising news that Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith will not seek re-election in 2026. While Democrats remain favored in the race, Jim and Greg note that multiple retirements signal deeper concerns within the party. They also examine the Democrats’ bleak outlook at the state level in New Hampshire and how strong candidate selection will be crucial for the GOP’s chances of flipping Georgia’s Senate seat in 2026.

They also analyze Hamas’ decision to release hostages based on the existing ceasefire agreement but not comply with Trump’s demand to release all captives by Saturday. Jim warns that allowing Hamas to ignore this ultimatum without consequences could weaken the U.S. position, and he argues that the Trump administration must have a clear response.

Finally, they shake their heads as Illinois Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky questions whether the term “manufacturing” deters women from pursuing such careers because it “sounds like a guy.” Jim sees this as yet another example of Democrats resorting to ridiculous rhetoric and political stunts as they struggle with their dwindling influence in Washington.

Positive Michigan Senate Poll, The Dems’ DOGE Hysteria, Oval Office Access Spat

February 12, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Positive Michigan Senate Poll, The Dems’ DOGE Hysteria, Oval Office Access Spat” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg on 3 Martini Lunch as they focus on a new Michigan poll suggesting Republicans have the edge in the 2026 Senate race, the Dems’ hysterical focus on Elon Musk and DOGE, and the White House barring the Associated Press from an Oval Office gathering because it won’t acknowledge the Gulf of America,

First, Jim and Greg analyze a very early poll showing Republican Mike Rogers leading Pete Buttigieg in a hypothetical U.S. Senate matchup. Could the GOP win a Senate seat in Michigan for the first time in more than 30 years? They also discuss the weak fundraising numbers from New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen and debate whether New Hampshire might present a valuable GOP pickup opportunity in the 2026 elections.

Next, Jim and Greg dive into the Democrats’ exaggerated outrage over “unelected bureaucrats” making decisions within the executive branch, particularly regarding the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Democrats have long used the administrative state to push their policies, yet they now criticize the same system they’ve relied on.. However, they do encourage Elon Musk and his team to be more transparent about what they are finding so the American people can see it all.

Finally, Jim and Greg react to the ongoing spat between the White House and the Associated Press (AP) over press access to the Oval Office. The White House allegedly blocked the AP from a pool of reporters during an Oval Office event because the wire service refuses to use “Gulf of America” instead of the preferred “Gulf of Mexico.”

Michigan’s Looming Senate Battle, Deep Panic Over DeepSeek, Will AI ‘Reconfigure’ Society?

January 28, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Michigan’s Looming Senate Battle, Deep Panic Over DeepSeek, Will AI ‘Reconfigure’ Society?” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg on 3 Martini Lunch as they analyze three critical topics: the GOP’s chances of flipping a Michigan Senate seat, whether China now has a significant lead in AI development, and bold predictions about AI’s impact on society.
First, they break down the implications of Michigan Senator Gary Peters’ decision not to seek re-election in 2026. With Republicans narrowly missing a Senate seat there last cycle, could this be their best shot at a pickup in decades? Jim and Greg explore the political landscape and speculate on potential contenders for the open seat.
Next, they scrutinize DeepSeek, a Chinese-linked artificial intelligence reportedly more advanced than U.S.-developed AI. Jim questions the company’s claims about its development timeline and costs, while both hosts express frustration over Americans willingly embracing more Chinese-made tech that could compromise privacy and security.
Finally, they react to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s provocative assertion that artificial intelligence may lead to significant societal restructuring. While they acknowledge the transformative power of technological breakthroughs, Jim and Greg roll their eyes at the dramatic, Bond villain-esque rhetoric surrounding AI’s potential influence.

Biden Pardon Fallout: Dems in Disarray, Media Mockery, More White House Lies

December 3, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Biden Pardon Fallout: Dems in Disarray, Media Mockery, More White House Lies” on Spreaker.

On Tuesday’s 3 Martini Lunch, Jim and Greg dissect the fallout from President Biden’s sweeping pardon of Hunter Biden, highlighting Democratic efforts to reshape the narrative, late-night comedy jabs, and the ongoing deception from Biden’s allies.

First, they credit Brianna Keilar of CNN for grilling outspoken New York Rep. Dan Goldman over his previous claim that Biden respected the justice system too much to pardon his son. When Goldman attempts to misrepresent the facts, Keilar doesn’t let him off the hook.

They also delve into Jon Stewart’s sharp critique of the Bidens and the Democrats, spotlighting their blatant hypocrisy. Stewart also points out that the pardon extends well beyond the issues Hunter Biden faced in court. Jim and Greg argue the timing of left-wing entertainers targeting the Bidens is more strategic than principled.

Lastly, Jim and Greg discuss White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s insistence that Biden didn’t lie about his stance on a pardon, despite evidence to the contrary. They also criticize her for singling out a National Review reporter who highlighted an NBC report exposing Biden’s long-considered plan to pardon his son.

Dems’ Pennsylvania Panic, Big Tech Embraces Nuclear, Kamala & the Middle East

October 18, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Dems’ Pennsylvania Panic, Big Tech Embraces Nuclear, Kamala & the Middle East” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for a special edition of the 3 Martini Lunch as they serve up two good martinis, a crazy one, and some fun to celebrate the podcast’s 14-year anniversary. Today, they discuss Democrats’ growing fears in Pennsylvania, Big Tech’s newfound support for nuclear energy, and Kamala Harris’s mixed messaging after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

First, they dive into a Politico story about Democratic unease in Pennsylvania. Longtime Democratic operatives are anonymously criticizing the Harris campaign’s efforts in the state. They also note how Sen. Bob Casey is airing ads highlighting the rare occasions he sided with Trump or against Biden. Greg also shares the increasingly desperate fundraising emails landing in his inbox as the election looms.

Next, they applaud Big Tech’s shift toward nuclear power, with companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon aggressively pursuing it to power data centers and other projects. Meanwhile, Jim slams the left for its irrational opposition to nuclear energy, which has stalled progress since the 1979 Three Mile Island incident and set back the nation’s energy potential for decades.

Then, they credit Kamala Harris for saying a lot of the right things in her response to the death of Hamas military leader Yahya Sinwar, but they cringe big time at her insistence that this should lead to the creation of a Palestinian state. Jim says the message that would send to the world would be devastating.

Finally, Jim and Greg celebrate 14 years of the 3 Martini Lunch podcast with a recap of Jim’s best quips from recent months and a flashback to their all-time favorite moment on the podcast.
