CBS vs. Free Speech, Illegal Border Crossings Plummet, The Right Dominates Political Messaging

February 17, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “CBS vs. Free Speech, Illegal Border Crossings Plummet, The Right Is Winning the Messaging Wars” on Spreaker.

Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram fills in for Jim. Join Scot and Greg for the 3 Martini Lunch as they discuss CBS News’ attacks on free speech, the significant decline in illegal border crossings, and how the right is outpacing the left on political messaging. They also offer their quick thoughts on the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live.
They start with a deep dive into multiple efforts by CBS News to undermine free speech. Scot and Greg explore the controversial comments made by Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan, who suggested that too much free speech contributed to the rise of the Nazis and the Holocaust. They also take aim at 60 Minutes‘ favorable coverage of German laws prosecuting individuals for allegedly posting offensive or false information online. They explain why CBS is taking this dangerous position and how it distorts the concept of free speech.
Next, the hosts celebrate the dramatic drop in illegal border crossings. They highlight a report showing just 229 illegal crossings on Sunday, a stark contrast to the peak numbers during the Biden administration. Greg attributes the sharp decline to policies enacted by the Trump administration that ended the incentives for illegal immigration, while Scot points out that President Biden could have implemented similar measures to achieve these results but refused.
Then they marvel at a new Politico report in which Democrats acknowledge that Republicans are “running circles” around them in terms of political messaging, which has almost never been the case. Scot explains why this is a significant development for the left, and how it explains their efforts, along with the media, to suppress free speech.
Finally, Scot shares his thoughts on Sunday’s 50th anniversary special for Saturday Night Live and which moments stood out in the program.

Trump’s Goals for Gaza, USAID’s Politico Problem, Dems Already Want Impeachment

February 5, 2025 by GregC

Listen to “Trump’s Goals for Gaza, USAID’s Politico Problem, Dems Already Want Impeachment” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for 3 Martini Lunch as they react to President Trump’s suggestion to take over Gaza, USAID’s questionable spending on foreign and domestic media, and the latest call for President Trump’s impeachment from a House Democrat.

First, they dive into Trump’s proposal for the U.S. to take control of Gaza, relocate the people, clean up the area, and transform it into a Mediterranean resort-like destination. Greg argues that it’s a terrible idea as described, but also questions what Trump’s true strategy might be. But Jim offers…a surprisingly positive take on the plan.

Next, they shudder at some of the egregious waste uncovered in the DOGE audit of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Specifically, they examine why millions of our tax dollars ended up in the hands of Politico and other media outlets.

Finally, they address Texas Rep. Al Green’s call for President Trump’s impeachment, making him the first Democrat in Congress to do so in the new Trump presidency. While Green has files articles of impeachment before, Jim and Greg explain why this latest push is nothing more than a political stunt aimed at drawing attention, especially with the GOP controlling both chambers of Congress.

Finally, they roll their eyes as Texas Rep. Al Green becomes the first congressional Democrat to call for President Trump’s impeachment. This is not Green’s first attempt to oust a sitting Republican president, but with the GOP running both chambers of Congress, it’s nothing more than a stunt to attract attention.

Dems’ Pennsylvania Panic, Big Tech Embraces Nuclear, Kamala & the Middle East

October 18, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Dems’ Pennsylvania Panic, Big Tech Embraces Nuclear, Kamala & the Middle East” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg for a special edition of the 3 Martini Lunch as they serve up two good martinis, a crazy one, and some fun to celebrate the podcast’s 14-year anniversary. Today, they discuss Democrats’ growing fears in Pennsylvania, Big Tech’s newfound support for nuclear energy, and Kamala Harris’s mixed messaging after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

First, they dive into a Politico story about Democratic unease in Pennsylvania. Longtime Democratic operatives are anonymously criticizing the Harris campaign’s efforts in the state. They also note how Sen. Bob Casey is airing ads highlighting the rare occasions he sided with Trump or against Biden. Greg also shares the increasingly desperate fundraising emails landing in his inbox as the election looms.

Next, they applaud Big Tech’s shift toward nuclear power, with companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon aggressively pursuing it to power data centers and other projects. Meanwhile, Jim slams the left for its irrational opposition to nuclear energy, which has stalled progress since the 1979 Three Mile Island incident and set back the nation’s energy potential for decades.

Then, they credit Kamala Harris for saying a lot of the right things in her response to the death of Hamas military leader Yahya Sinwar, but they cringe big time at her insistence that this should lead to the creation of a Palestinian state. Jim says the message that would send to the world would be devastating.

Finally, Jim and Greg celebrate 14 years of the 3 Martini Lunch podcast with a recap of Jim’s best quips from recent months and a flashback to their all-time favorite moment on the podcast.

Kamala’s CNN Interview, Left Ignores Huge Oil Spill, Politico’s Preposterous Partisanship

August 28, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “Kamala’s CNN Interview, Left Ignores Huge Oil Spill, Politico’s Preposterous Partisanship” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they discuss what to expect from Kamala Harris, Tim Walz, and Dana Bash now that Harris is finally agreeing to an interview. They also weigh in on Democrats and environmentalists ignoring a massive oil spill in the Red Sea caused by Iranian proxies and Politico being horrified that JD Vance is connecting Harris to the performance of the Biden administration.

First, Jim is glad to see Harris finally agree to any interview after 37 days of ducking formal, on-camera interviews and press conferences. He and Greg also consider how CNN’s Dana Bash will approach the event and which questions need to be asked.

Next, they scratch their heads as the Biden administration, national Democrats and prominent environmental groups remain awfully quiet after the Iran-backed Houthis attacked an oil tanker in the Red Sea, triggering an exponentially bigger spill than the Exxon Valdez suffered back in 1989.

Finally, they hammer Politico for reporting that GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vance “tries to tether Harris to Biden during Michigan rally.” Uh, she’s the sitting Vice President of the United States. And Jim and Greg remark on how the media and the left are trying to convince Americans that Harris has no political past or involvement in the very unpopular policies of the Biden presidency.

UK Criminalizes Speech, CNN’s Ugly Walz Defense, Politico’s Pathetic Pandering

August 9, 2024 by GregC

Listen to “UK Criminalizes Speech, CNN’s Ugly Walz Defense, Politico’s Pathetic Pandering” on Spreaker.

Undisputed King of Stuff and Discourse Magazine and Arizona Republic columnist Jon Gabriel is in for Jim. Today, Jon and Greg offer brief thoughts on the 50th anniversary of President Nixon’s resignation. Then they hammer the British government for criminalizing free speech, take CNN to task for minimizing JD Vance’s service in defense of Tim Walz, and get a good laugh at just how far Politico will go to carry water for the left.

First, they unload on officials in the UK who threaten to arrest anyone for making or repeating a social media post they deem offensive or could lead to violence. And they have many police officers who spend all day scouring social media looking for offenders.

Next, they scold CNN’s Brianna Keilar for suggesting that Sen. Vance is an inperfect messenger to criticize Gov. Walz’s service because while Vance’s official title in Iraq was “combat correspondent.” It’s an argument concocted simply to deflect the mounting criticism of Walz.

Finally, they get a kick out of Politico’s fevered efforts to boost Democrats and criticize Republicans. They point to one story fawning over how well Walz looks in casual wear and other one that compares Trump to Mussolini because they both survived assassination attempts.

Remembering Mrs. Carter, Big Libertarian Win in Argentina, Biden’s Polls Get Worse, Media Malpractice on Debt

November 20, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “Remembering Mrs. Carter, Big Libertarian Win in Argentina, Biden’s Polls Get Worse, Media Malpractice on Debt” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they serve up three critical martinis after opening with thoughts on the passing of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who died Sunday at age 96.

Then they react to libertarian Javier Milei’s dominant win in Argentina’s presidential race amid a massive economic crisis there. They also note Milei’s unconventional approach to politics and the media’s reflexive opposition to him.

They also chronicle a Fox News poll showing showing voters trust Republicans to deal with issues ranging from the border to foreign policy and from crime to government spending – by a wide margin. And an NBC poll shows President Biden with his worst numbers yet. But can Republicans actually capitalize on all this?

Finally, they fume as Politico shifts from constantly demonizing any GOP calls for spending restraints to suddenly noticing out-of-control spending and huge interest payments on the debt – and are now demanding the House GOP majority do something about it.

Sen. Scott Suspends 2024 Campaign, Politico Confirms Biden’s Incapable, San Francisco’s Curious Clean Up

November 13, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “Sen. Scott Suspends 2024 Campaign, Politico Confirms Biden’s Incapable, San Francisco’s Curious Clean Up” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they applaud South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott for his presidential campaign but also for recognizing that it’s not going to happen for him in 2024 and suspending his White House bid.

They also throw up their hands as Politico confirms that President Biden is incapable of governing and campaigning like a normal president. But instead of arguing he should retire, the piece suggests strategies for the Biden campaign to cover up the president’s liabilities and bring in veteran campaign officials to get him over the finish line.

Finally, they shake their heads as San Francisco officials prove they can clean up the city within the budget when a bunch of foreign leaders are coming to town but they won’t do it on a daily basis for the taxpayers who pay the bills.

Fetterman’s Curious Encounter, FBI’s Terrorism Warning, Politico Dissects DeSantis’ Boots

October 31, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “Fetterman’s Curious Encounter, FBI’s Terrorism Warning, Politico Dissects DeSantis’ Boots” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they react to an odd encounter Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman had with one of his voters – a voter who was shoved outside by a staffer after demanding an answer about a Middle East ceasefire.

They also wince as FBI Director Christopher Wray warns of Hamas-inspired terrorist attacks against Americans – similar to the ISIS-inspired attacks from several years ago. And Jim breaks down how anti-Semites convince themselves that the demonization of Jews justifies any horrible deed in their minds.

Finally, they hammer Politico for running a ridiculous story investigating whether Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis likely places lifts into his boots to appear slightly taller. And Jim explains how this type of “journalism” has made our country and our politics dumber.

NRSC Picking Favorites, Ring Cameras & the Cops, Newsom’s Shadow Campaign

July 11, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “NRSC Picking Favorites, Ring Cameras & the Cops, Newsom’s Shadow Campaign” on Spreaker.

Greg is back! Join Jim and Greg as they discuss National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines publicly endorsing his preferred candidates in Montana and Nevada in an effort to avoid missed opportunities like the GOP suffered in 2022. They also roll their eyes as Wired magazine denounces Ring doorbell cameras as being too easy to use to help police solve crimes. Finally, they raise their eyebrows as Politico rolls out fawning coverage of California Gov. Gavin Newsom – including stories on his inner circle and his leadership style. Not exactly the kind of stories we usually see from people who are not running for office soon.

New York’s Energy Madness, When Lawmakers Can’t Function, Politico’s Ugly Hypocrisy

May 19, 2023 by GregC

Listen to “New York’s Energy Madness, When Lawmakers Can’t Function, Politico’s Ugly Hypocrisy” on Spreaker.

Join Jim and Greg as they break down three lousy martinis. First, they shake their heads as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers order the closure of fossil fuel-based power plants in the state within seven years. That would take away nearly half of the state’s energy supply and even state officials aren’t sure how they will generate enough power to make up the difference. They also wince at the latest evidence that Sen. Dianne Feinstein is no longer able to serve as a senator, discuss the political implications of a resignation, and consider whether there is any good method for addressing these cases other than leaving the decision up to a lawmaker in obvious decline. Finally, they unload on Politico, not only for a nasty attack on Ron and Casey DeSantis, but for running with the accusation that Mrs. DeSantis is some sort of Lady MacBeth, just six months after Politico condemned the “Lady MacBeth trope” when it was used against Jill Biden and Giselle Fetterman.
