Hamas Murders Hostages, Illegals Causing Criminal Chaos, The Constitution Is a Threat?
Join Jim and Greg for three lousy martinis that all have a strong crazy streak too. After Greg recaps his visit to the Calvin Coolidge presidential site in Vermont, they condemn Hamas for murdering hostages as well as the Biden administration’s reaction. They also shudder as illegals are comprising a huge percentage of arrests in New York City but the laws are working against the law-abiding public. And they tear apart a New York Times column for saying the Constitution may be a threat to our politics.
First, they recoil at Hamas murdering six hostages, including American Hersh Goldberg-Polin. But they’re also staggered that the immediate media and Biden administration reaction is to put more pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cut a deal with the bloodthirsty terrorists who orchestrated the October 7th attacks and just slaughtered several innocent people.
Next, they fume as police sources in New York report that 75 percent of assault, robbery, and domestic violence arrests in Midtown Manhattan are of illegal immigrants, and they estimate the number to be 60 percent in Queens. If that weren’t bad enough, they explain how sanctuary city laws mean the perpetrators are often freed and officers can’t check their legal status or work with Immigration & Customs Enforcement.
Finally, they shake their heads as a New York Times column suggests the Constitution is a threat to our politics because of undemocratic aspects like the Electoral College and small states getting the same number of senators as larger states. Oh, and they they say the originalist bent of the current Supreme Court is a problem because the justices dare to seek out what the Founding Fathers meant when they wrote the Constitution.

Harris Picks Walz, Why Markets Are Volatile, Why You Shouldn’t Panic
Listen to “Harris Picks Walz, Why Markets Are Volatile, Why You Shouldn’t Panic” on Spreaker.
Brian Wesbury, Chief Economist at First Trust LP and the former Chief Economist for the Joint Economic Committee of Congress, is in for Jim. Today, Brian and Greg dissect Kamala Harris choosing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate and why it may be a gift to the GOP. Brian also explains why the markets are in turmoil right now, why you shouldn’t panic over it, and more.
First, they respond to the breaking news that Harris-Walz will be the ticket for Democrats in 2024. They explain why this is the furthest left ticket in recent memory and why it gives Donald Trump and JD Vance ample opportunities to expose how far out of the mainstream Harris and Walz really are. And they discuss the Walz record in Minnesota – from his disastrous handling of the 2020 riots to his far left economic and social positions.
Next, Brian goes through the factors leading to the major volatility in world markets over the past several days. He says we are largely paying the price for terrible policies enacted during the Covid pandemic and he says the “morphine” is finally wearing off. But there are other important factors as well, and Brian tells us why he thinks the U.S. is headed into a recession but nothing close to a 2008-level crisis.
Finally, Brian explains why investors should not panic during this market turmoil and what the smartest government response would be.

GOP Ousting Another Speaker? The Left’s WNBA Pay Grievance, Can’t Say ‘Illegal Alien’
Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram is in for Jim. Today, Scot and Greg serve up three crazy martinis ranging from Capitol Hill to women’s sports to the high school classroom.
First, they sigh as some House Republicans vow to move forward on trying to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson over his handling of the House agenda – and what his critics call passing the Democrats’ agenda. There are valid criticisms of Johnson’s decisions, positions, and priorities on some issues, but what would removing another Speaker of the House accomplish now, when Republicans have an even smaller majority than they did when Johnson was elected?
Next, they roll their eyes as President Biden and others on the left try to pander to women by demanding WNBA players get equal pay with the men in the NBA. Of course the big wage disparity has nothing to do with the sex of the players but whether their league is profitable. The NBA makes billions of dollars each year. The WNBA has lost money for its entire existence.
Finally, they highlight the case of a North Carolina high school student who was suspended for three days for asking his teacher whether the word “alien” in his vocabulary lesson referred to space aliens or people who come into the U.S. with no green cards.

Biden Mulls Border Orders, Debt Interest Exceeds Defense Spending, Labeling Biden as ‘Great’
Join Jim and Greg as they break down what Biden is reportedly considering on the border, the interest on our debt rapidly spiraling out of control, and an ex-GOP campaign figure telling Dems to declare Biden a “great” president.
First, they assess an Axios story about how Biden is considering executive action that could significantly reduce the number of people illegally flooding into our country. He allegedly wants to claim that he taking action on the issue while Republicans just talk about it. Taking this action would not only confirm what conservatives have been screaming this for years about executive action, but, if done right, would actually do some good – even if it’s only an election year ploy.
Then they fume at the news that paying off the quickly accumulating interest on our $34 trillion+ national debt will cost more than defense spending this year. Higher interest rates are the reason for the higher payments, but reckless spending is the reason that higher interest rates were needed. And neither party has any interest in even discussing possible remedies for our debt.
Finally, they get a big laugh out of former Republican campaign official turned Lincoln Project figure Stuart Stevens pleading with Democrats to go beyond arguing that Biden is preferable to Trump and start declaring Biden to be a “great” president.

Strong January Jobs Report, Racism vs. Reality Over Walgreen’s, RNC’s Financial Disaster
Join Jim and Greg for good, bad, and crazy martinis to wrap up the work week!
First, they’re impressed as the U.S. economy added 353,000 jobs in January – nearly double the amount expected. They also discuss the potential political impact of reports like this on the 2024 campaign and some additional caveats to the strong numbers.
Then they sigh as squad member and Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley accuses Walgreen’s of racial discrimination for closing a second store in her district instead of exploring what other reasons the company would have for shutting down that location.
Finally, they fume after a shocking report from Red State shows how the Republican National Committee recklessly spent of money on flowers, limousines, consultants, and office supplies, while the Democratic National Committee focused expenditures on Get Out the Vote campaigns, maintaining voter files, and helping other Dem organizations. And the news only gets worse from there.

Milei’s Free Market Master Class, FBI Snooping on Purchases, Speaker Johnson on Thin Ice?
Undisputed King of Stuff, columnist, and longtime Ricochet Editor-in-Chief Jon Gabriel is in for Jim today. He and Greg have three doozies for martinis today.
First, they loudly cheer new Argentina President Javier Milei for going to the World Economic Forum in Davos and boldly championing free markets and denouncing excessive government regulation and collectivist policies. Why aren’t more American conservatives able to defend freedom and condemn government intrusion so well?
Next, they hammer the FBI for snooping on our purchases and searches (without warrants of course) and apparently determining that people who shop at Cabela’s, read the Bible, or support Donald Trump are some sort of threat.
Finally, they roll their eyes and unload on a few House Republicans for threatening to boot House Speaker Mike Johnson for agreeing to another continuing resolution on federal spending. The frustration is certainly understandable but, for multiple reasons, simple math tells us that vacating the chair won’t solve anything.

Chris Christie’s Bizarre Exit, Inflation Is Still Too High, DeSantis & Haley Duke It Out
Join Jim and Greg as they break down the biggest developments in the presidential race, stubbornly high inflation, and a pivotal day in sports.
First, they dissect former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s decision to suspend his 2024 presidential campaign but not endorse anyone else and trash Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley in addition to Donald Trump.
They also cringe as the December inflation numbers come in higher than expected and the year-over-year numbers are still unhealthy.
Then they analyze the final GOP primary debate as DeSantis and Haley hammer each other instead of President Biden or even their own party’s frontrunner.
Finally, they note the end of a coaching era in pro and college football.

2023 Martini Awards Part 1: Most Overrated, Underrated, Honest Political Figures
In this first installment, they offer their individual selections for Most Overrated Political Figure, Most Underrated Political Figure, and Most Honest Political Figure.
Jim and Greg are largely in agreement on whom they see as the most overrated political figure of the year, although they come at the selection from different perspectives.
When it comes to underrated political figures, they both pick presidential candidates but for very different reasons.
Finally, Jim’s choice for most honest political figure is someone he woud have never imagined just a few months ago, while Greg picks one of the few lawmakers who has no problem calling out his own side.
Don’t miss Friday’s special edition, when Jim and Greg list the political figures they were sorry to see pass away in 2023. They’ll also name their rising stars over the past year and people who seem to be fading into political oblivion.

Biden’s Inflation Reality Check, Joe Wilts Under Leftist Pressure, Education Sec. Flunks Reagan 101
Join Jim and Greg as they wince at a new Bloomberg reports showing how much more Americans are paying for food, electricity, water, rent, childcare, and much more. But the report is an important rebuttal to the Biden administration’s gaslighting that the inflation problem has been solved.
They also groan at reports that just one day after Biden reasonably said he does not trust casualty figures from Hamas, the president buckled under criticism from Muslim leaders, said he was ashamed of himself and promised to do better.
Finally, they have some fun as Education Sec. Miguel Cardona appears to quote President Reagan unironically as having said he was from the government and was here to help. Of course, that’s exactly the opposite of what Reagan said.
