The State of the 2024 Presidential Campaign

Election Day 2024 is more than 16 months away, but the first Republican debate is less than two months away and voters in the first primary and caucus states will be casting their ballots in just a few months. Today, Jim and Greg examine the state of the campaign in three different ways.
First, they look at the Democratic primary. While President Biden has a commanding lead over Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Marianne Williamson, the enthusiasm – even among Democrats – is very low for another four years of Biden. Will the Democrats stick with Biden regardless of his approval numbers and mounting evidence of physical and mental decline?
Then they pivot to the Republican primary, where former President Trump has opened a big lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis both nationally and increasingly in the states. Is the GOP base loyalty towards Trump locked in and virtually irreversible or is there an avenue for DeSantis or anyone else to close the gap.
Finally, they preview a likely Biden-Trump rematch and consider how much the electorate has changed in the past few years. Will Biden’s poor performance be enough of a boost for Trump or will Trump’s focus on 2020 and his legal challenges lead to another four years for Biden?

So reality smacks the green agenda in the face yet again. They also cheer the impending retirement of Maryland Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin after more than half a century of taxpayers footing his salary. A feeding frenzy among Democrats is already underway. Republicans are big underdogs but an open seat improves their odds. Jim wonders of Larry Hogan will reconsider after saying he had no interest in the race earlier this year. Finally, they welcome next week’s end to vaccine mandates for federal employees and foreign visitors, and Jim suspects that by letting mandates die quietly, the Biden administration is silently admitting they were a terrible idea.

Chad and Jim Geraghty find it hilarious that the city of San Francisco concluded that after six years, their boycott of red states has had no impact whatsoever on those states, has significantly increased costs and red tape for the city, and repealed the boycott.

Meanwhile, it’s good that an ISIS mastermind who killed Americans during the withdrawal from Afghanistan was killed, but Chad and Jim wonder how the Taliban found that terrorist before the U.S. did.

Finally, the White House is formulating an official strategy to rebuild Kamala Harris’ image, which is a crazy thing for an 80-year-old president to have on his to-do list as he’s trying to convince America for four more years.
